  1. By putting the masthead behind the objective (the model) the designer showed that although it isn’t showing – the magazine producers are expecting the audience to know what the masthead is. The subheadings challenge the codes and conventions as they are set diagonally, this brings the audiences’ attention towards the writing, another aspect that will attract the audience is the variety of colour used, although it seems to be a wide variety the colours all fit in with the magazine’s theme. This magazine only has a barcode and no QR Code which shows that they don’t have any online interaction with its audience. The actual model is the main focus of the magazine, from the model you can interpret that it is a R’n’B magazine – you can tell this from the way she is dressed and her body language. As she is young looking it gives off the impression that this magazine is for teenagers or young adults (13-26). This magazine will influence my future work as I believe the way this magazine fits together makes the magazine strong. Another thing I noticed was that having the subheadings on the front page makes it look like a front page and contents page at the same time challenging the codes and conventions – this will be easier for the audience to know what is in the magazine, on the other hand it will stop them from opening the magazine. Therefore I will be using this technique, but changing it so that the audience will open the magazine.

  2. This is a simple and bold masthead, this takes any distractions away from the main focus being the model. Having the masthead behind the model shows that the magazine producer expects the audience to know the name – this happens in many other magazines too so to challenge codes and convections I believe having the same technique will make it common. Having this the same colour of the masthead shows that it is all link and that this will be the main subject of the magazine. The change of font size also brings attention as it shows it is nearly as important as the masthead and model. The model on this magazine is shown to be the main focus, due to the positioning in front of the masthead this bring his face out, although further down the page there are more details added and the font brings more attention and distracts it from the model. I wouldn’t use many of these techniques in my work because I believe it has made the front cover weak. Although the colours all compliment each other.

  3. These are other magazines I researched into, they are all mainly R’n’B magazines – I researched this particular genre as it was the one which reflected my magazine plans the most. Doing this researched it showed me how most magazines are set out and how others challenge the codes and conventions. In the magazines I picked to be influenced by they all have the masthead at the top of the page which gave me an idea to challenge the codes and convections when producing other magazines. This particular magazine caught my eye due to how bold the model looks on it, although it takes the focus off the information it attracts the audience immediately. At first look the magazine looks for people 16+ as the model’s body language is as if he wanted to fight the audience or whoever wasbehind the camera.
