What is HEAR? • Higher Education Access Routeisan admissions route for school leavers fromsocio-economic groups underrepresented at third level education. • It was established to ensure that all Leaving Certificate students have a fair and equal opportunity to progress to third level education.

  3. What colleges participate? • Dublin City University • Dublin Institute of Technology • University College Cork • University College Dublin • University of Limerick • NUI Galway • NUI Maynooth • Trinity College Dublin • Froebel College of Education • Coláiste Mhuire, Marino Institute of Education • Church of Ireland, College of Education • Mary Immaculate College • Mater Dei Institute of Education • St. Angela’s College, Sligo • St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra

  4. Who should apply? • You must have a family income less than the threshold detailed below.  • HEAR defines this income threshold by: • How many children are in your family; • How many people in your family are in full time education; • Your family’s total income.

  5. Why apply? • Reduced points CAO offers in the participating HEIs provided you matriculate and meet minimum entry requirements • Post-entry supports such as academic, social, personal and financial (where available)

  6. How do you make an application? • Apply online at www.cao.ie by 1 February 2010 • Supply supporting documents to CAO by 1 April 2010

  7. How will my application be processed? Financial Indicators: • Indicator 1: Your family income falls within the HEAR 2010 Income Threshold • Indicator 2: Your family has a Medical Card/GP Visit Card • Indicator 3: Your family receives a means tested social assistance payment Social & Cultural Indicators: • Indicator 4: You come from a socio-economic group under-represented in HE • Indicator 5: You have attended a DEIS school for 5 or more years • Indicator 6: Your family lives in an area of urban or rural disadvantage

  8. You must meet low family income + a combination of 2 other indicators

  9. 70% of all eligible HEAR applicants received offers in 2008

  10. I want to apply to HEAR, what's next? • Download your HEAR Application Guide and Workbook from cao.ie or accesscollege.ie • Fill in the HEAR Application Guide and Workbook with your parent(s)/guardian(s) • Complete online HEAR application at www.cao.ie

  11. What are supporting documents? • You need to submit supporting financial documents for each type of income you ticked Yes to in Section 8.2 • You must supply supporting documents if you have a Medical Card/GP Visit Card • You must supply supporting documents to CAO by 1 April 2010 • Keep a photocopy and proof of postage
