  2. History • It is a natural breed with its origin in the Carpathian Mountains. This breed has been paid a special attention to in the north-east Romania, Bucovina county and the selection and improvement has lead to the actual type. The individuals belonging to this breed are successfully used both for the defence of the flocks and herds and for the defence of the households in the above mentioned region. It is also known as "DULĂU" or "CĂPĂU"(ancient Romanian names).

  3. Utilisation • Guardian for flocks and an excellent watch dog.

  4. General Appearance Large sized dog, commanding, haughty and proud. The breed has got an obvious sexual dimorphism.

  5. Important Proportions • The length of the body is slightly longer than the height at the withers. • The length of the skull is equal with length of the muzzle.

  6. Behaviour - Temperament • It is a very balanced and calm dog, faithfully, he likes children. It is a very good guardian for flocks, courageous and a real fighter against the possible animal prey (bear, wolf, lynx). It has got a strong barking. When strangers or animals approached, its barking is very strong, with a low tonality. During the night it patrols around the household or the flock/herd.

  7. Head (1) • Massive but not heavy, slightly up than outline. • CRANIAL REGION: • Skull: Medium wide, slightly domed. The upper profile of the skull and muzzle are slightly convergent. Viewed from face, the upper profile is slightly domed, from lateral almost flat. Skull width: males 16-18 cm, females 15-17 cm, zygomathique arches are medium developed. Occipital protuberance is slightly evident. • Stop: Slightly pronounced.

  8. Head (2) FACIAL REGION: • Nose: Large, well developed, black. • Muzzle: Blunt, with same length of the skull; well developed, reducing progressively towards the nose but never pointed; strong mandible. • Lips: Thick, tight, strong pigmentation. • Jaws/Teeth: Strong jaws; complete dentition, strong, healthy and white teeth, well set; scissor bite. Pincer bite is tolerated. • Cheeks: Not prominents.

  9. Head (3) FACIAL REGION: • Eyes: Small related to the head; almond-shaped and obliquely, brown or slightly light but never yellow. Eyelids well pigmented. • Ears: Relatively high set, “V” shaped with slightly rounded point, pendent and close to cheeks. The cropping is prohibited.

  10. Neck • Medium length, large and strong, never throaty

Body • Good stamina. • Outline: Horizontal. • Withers: Slightly evident. • Back: Strong and muscular. • Loin: Muscular and strong. • Croup: Muscular and medium inclination towards base of tail. • Chest: Large and deep, descending to elbows level, well-arched ribs. • Underline: Slightly ascendant.

  12. Tail • High set-on. At rest, it is pendent; reaching or lower than the hock; when the dog is alert or in action the tail is raised up to the level of the back or slightly above it, with slight upward curve, but never curled over the back. The docking is prohibited.

  13. Limbs • Upright, seen from the front or the side. • FOREQUARTERS: • General appearance: Upright, seen from the front or the side.. • Shoulders: Long, shoulder blades oblique, well muscled and firmly attached to the body. Scapular-humeral angle close to 100-110 angle. • Arm: Medium long, muscular. • Elbows: Close to the body, free movement. • Forearm: Strong, not too long. • Carpus (wrist): Strong. • Pastern: With short bones, slightly slanting. • Forefeet: Oval, compact and massive, toes tight and arched, black or ashen nails.

  14. Limbs • HINDQUARTERS:General appearance: Muscular and strong, normal in stance. • Thighs: Medium long, wide, very muscular. • Stifle: Femoral-tibial angle is cca. 110. • Lower thigh: Moderately long, muscular. • Hock: Viewed from profile is wide, medium angulated. From behind is parallel to a median plane of body. • Rear pastern: Strong and straight. The presence of dewclaws should not be penalized. • Hind feet: Ovals, compact and strong, with black or ashen nails.

  15. Gait / Movement Harmonious, elastic, well coordinated, giving the impression of effortless power. Preferred gait is the trot. Crossover will be penalized.

  16. Coat HAIR: Head and the front part of the legs are covered with short hair. On the body, hair is abundant, long (6-9 cm), flat, straight and rough. Undercoat is shorter, much dense and supple, more light colour. At the neck region, hair is much longer forming a mane; On the back side of the forequarters, the hair forming fringes; on the back side of hindquarters, hair is longer and forming culottes. The tail is bushy.

  17. Coat COLOUR: Classical color: Main colour of coat is a clear white or white-beige with distinct patches of grey, black or black with red-fawn reflections. On the legs can appear black or grey ticks. Brindle aspect of patches to be rejected. • Solid colors: Solid color (without patches) subjects are accepted but not encouraged: white, white-beige, ashen-grey or black.

  18. Size and Weight • Height at withers: • males: 68-78 cm, ideal 71-75 cm • females: 64-72 cm, ideal 66-68 cm • Weight: proportional with height

  19. FAULTS: Any deviation from the foregoing points should be considered a fault. The faults will be penalized depending on the gravity of that particular fault. lack of substance or too heavy; not sufficient sexual character; missing a tooth other than P1; cropped ears; docked tail; overweight or weak subject. felty hair or short hair (under 6 cm); hair too long (over 9 cm) the absence of mane or fringes on the legs tail curled or carried in a ring ; flabby toes, toeing in or out; elbows turn out; heavy gait. SERIOUS FAULTS: untypical expression rounds, protruding eyes; erect ears; topline sagging or dipping; hair too short; curly coated or bad texture; yellow eyes; different color of eyes (heterochromous); cow hocks; Faults

  20. Faults • ELIMINATING FAULTS: • aggressive or shy; • not typical subject; • overshot or undershot bite; • missing of incisors or canines; • albinism; • naturally absent or atrophia of tail; • height under 65 cm or over 80 cm at males; • height under 62 cm or over 75 cm at females. • Any dog clearly showing physical or behavioral abnormalities shall be disqualified.
