Online Transactional Learning Project (LPC) TOM SERBY; ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY • Process • Scenario: deceased; student “firms” dealing with an estate • Validity of will • Revocation/alterations of will • Intestacy rules • Identify assets/liabilities of estate • Inheritance tax • Application for Grant of Representation • Lodging documents with Probate Registry • Advice on powers and duties of PRs • Distribution to beneficiaries • Preparation of estate accounts • Induction session: technical introduction and law of probate • Landmarks specified at induction act as milestones for project management • Week 1: agree firm name; students receive a memorandum • Week 2: receive correspondence from client requiring advice and writing to third parties (ascertaining assets and liabilities) • Weeks 3, 4 and 5: apply Grant of Representation; collect in assets, discharge liabilities • Week 6: distribution of estate, preparation of estate accounts and solicitors final bill • Tutor acts as firm’s training principal: contacted via discussion forum; will “drop in” and correct inappropriate actions • 32 documents available online: ranging from • Will • utility bills • legal forms • Agency pages: Links to real websites like • Essex County Council, • banks, • HMRC, • Essex Chronicle (download page for deceased estate notice) • Recording sheets: for “firms” to log progress • Webct discussion tool: both communications within “firms” and with actor agencies • Spreadsheet to allow students to record time and costs • Number of potential pitfalls to negotiate: Resource site offered “distractor” forms BACKGROUND LPC3 Transactional Learning Project (online): active learning based on practical process of doing realistic transactions VLE Collaborative learning: enhancing teamwork skills Learning from legal transactions rather than about legal transactions Enhancement of employability Outcomes All but one “firm” completedsuccessfully transparent as to who is “carrying” team/firm Overall costs ranged between £734 and £2,233 Student feedback mixed.
