Winter came early to Copper Harbor in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 1944. In fact, David suspected that the winter of 1943 had slept over, and woke up alongside the winter of 1944. Then they decided to work together.
One day in early November, snow walked on soft, silent slippers from Canada to the city of Copper Harbor and it didn’t walk away until it covered the entire city with a twelve inch blanket.
David and his friends went sledding after they had finished school. Sledding was more fun than learning English, geography, history, and arithmetic.
Soon so much snow had piled up along the roads and on the sidewalks and lawns of Copper Harbor that the schools and most of the stores closed. David and his friends ice skated and built snowmen and snow forts.
When Sam and David went to bed that night, the snow peeked through the windows at them.
The next morning when Sam and David woke up, the world outside their window looked like a snow lake with black and white trees swimming in it.
Houses, snowmen, David, and Sam swam happily through the snow.
Suddenly Sam stepped in a deep snow drift. Down, Down, Down, He fell into the wet, white snow.
“Help!” Sam yelled, but his mouth soon filled with snow. Sam shivered. He didn’t know what to do next. Then he had an idea.
The snow was like a lake so he would pretend that he was swimming. He would swim to the top of the snow. Sam swam through the deep drifts.
“I made it!” Sam shouted to David and the other boys who were building a snow fort beside the big snow drift. “I swam through the big snow drift!”
David and the boys didn’t hear Sam. They were busy building their snow fort. Sam went back to the snow drift, but this time he didn’t swim through it. Sam stretched out on top of the snowdrift and made… What did Same make?
What did Sam make in the snow? Have you ever made a snow angel? How do you make a snow angel?
Write a story about Sam and David playing in the snow. ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ ______________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________
