  2. Co-op…What is it? • Students earn credits working outside the school

  3. Classroom Component: • Pre-placement • Self-Assessment • Job Readiness (resume, cover letter, interviews, etc) • Health & Safety • Rights & Responsibilities • Integration • Workplace Opportunities & Challenges • Reflective Learning • Guidance course curriculum

  4. Placement Component: • 3 hours daily (or more for 3-4 credits) • Teacher visits to monitor progress, safety • PPLP (training plan) developed • Employer performance appraisals – affect mark

  5. Finding a Placement: • Review database – indicate preferences • Teacher attends “draft” – informs you about who will be interviewing you • Phone & set up 3+ interviews • Go to 3+ interviews • Sell yourself to employer! • Competitive process

  6. Co-op Isn’t a “Regular” Course • Not an “easy” credit • They call it “work”, not “fun” • Based on total hours, not days worked • Attendance is a “big deal”

  7. Benefits: • Out of the building • Chance to explore career options • Develop employability skills • Helps get references • Learn to deal with people outside of school • Great for “hands on” learners • Sometimes get part-time jobs • Great networking opportunity

  8. Challenges: • Out of the building • Requires maturity, people skills • Requires more self-management than in school • Organizational skills are key – often a challenge • They call it “work” for a reason
