  2. 1 Corinthians 1:1-2 • 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

  3. Wrong Uses • Christian who: • Is dead • Performed 2 miracles • Was approved by a vote to be made a “patron saint” • Process called “canonization” • “Super Christian” • Any extra-ordinary person - “She was a saint.”

  5. What is a Saint? • The word – Saint • Same Greek word is translated – holy, sanctified • Saint = a holy one • Greek word = consecrated, separted, dedicated

  6. Illustration • The 6th Commandment • Exodus 20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. • The Sabbath day was to be separate from other days in the week • This day is dedicated to God

In the Old Testament • Aaron – Psalm 106:16 When they envied Moses in the camp, And Aaron the saint of the Lord, • God's People – Deuteronomy 33:2-4 2 And he said: "The Lord came from Sinai, And dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came with ten thousands of saints; From His right hand Came a fiery law for them. 3 Yes, He loves the people; All His saints are in Your hand; They sit down at Your feet; Everyone receives Your words.

  8. In the Old Testament • Those who worship God – Psalm 30:4 Sing praise to the Lord, You saints of His, And give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name. • Those in covenant with God – Psalm 50:5 "Gather My saints together to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice."

In the New Testament • Members of local congregations • Romans 1:7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. • Philippians 4:21-22 22 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you. 22 All the saintsgreet you, but especially those who are of Caesar's household. • Jerusalem, Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Philippi,

In the New Testament • Those who live in a holy manner • Ephesians 5:3-4 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

How to become a saint • Repent = change of direction, change of mind • Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. • Acts 2:38a Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins • Decide to follow God; be dedicated to God • Decide to live a life for God – not for self

  12. How to become a saint • Be saved from sin – 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

  13. Are you a saint? • Not a patron saint inCatholic Church • Not a super-Christian • Not an extra-ordinary person

  14. Are you a saint? • BUT: • Have you repented of your sins? • Have you dedicated your life to God? • God wants you to follow Him • Be dedicated to God • Be separated from the world • YOU CAN DO THAT TODAY!
