Anglo Settlement in the South West • Anglo settlement increased in the 1820’s • Anglos used Mexican land for cattle grazing and searching for new fertile soil moved Americans west • 1830- Mexico banned new settlers in Texas
Annexation of Texas • Mexican law forbid slavery • The U.S., North and South debated about Texas as a slave state. • Texans fought Mexico in the battle of the Alamo and San Jacinto • US Annexed Texas (taken over) in 1845
Manifest Destiny • American’s wanted to expand “from sea to shining sea.” • Americans believed they were “destined” to rule all of North America. • Wanted land and to spread democracy and Christianity
Mexican-American War • War was fought 1846-1848 • Mexico still considered Texas part of their country. • President James Polk ordered the land to be taken over.
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Signed on February 2, 1848 ending the war • U.S. gained control of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California
St. Patrick’s Day Battalion • About 500 Americans deserted the U.S. army to support Mexico • Most of the soldiers were Irish-Americans • -The soldiers were captured by the US and excecuted.
