  1. Ecosystem Services/Renewable Vs. Nonrenewable Resources Processes through which natural ecosystems sustain human life.

  2. Ecosystem Services • The ecosystem provides ecosystem services that support life. • Substances that are directly used: • Food, plants and animals • Building materials • Fiber and fabric materials • Fuel • Medicinal plants • Oxygen replenishment

  3. Ecosystem Services • Some of the services are: • Providing wildlife habitats • Decomposing wastes • Controlling erosion and flooding • Controlling pests • Providing recreation

  4. Direct Benefits • Hunting, fishing, gathering food • Wood for heat and cooking • Medicines from plants • The Chinese star anise is used in Tamiflu

  5. Indirect Benefits • Soil formation • Erosion and soil control • Climate regulation • Genetic resources • Recreation

  6. Renewable vs. Nonrenewable resources • Renewable energy sources may be expensive, but it saves money in the long run. • Renewable resources are more sustainable while nonrenewable energy gets depleted rapidly. • Reducing the use of fossil fuels and energy consumption will benefit the Earth.

  7. Renewable vs. Nonrenewable resources • Solar power, wind power, geothermal energy, and hydropower are the 4 types of renewable energy sources • Fossil fuels such as oils, natural gases and coal are examples of nonrenweable resources.
