Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction • Gagne's book, The Conditions of Learning, first published in 1965, identified mental conditions for learning • Based on the information processing model of mental events that occur when adults are presented with various stimuli • Gagne created a nine-step process called the events of instruction, which correlate to and address the conditions of learning
The Nine Events • Gain attention • Start lesson with a dramatic video clip related to your topic • As a question that makes students think • Tell the learners the learning objective • Tell students what they will learn • Show an example/demonstrate what they will be able to do at the end of the lesson • Stimulate prior knowledge • Ask recall questions about previous learning • Hold a brainstorm session with students on what they already know about topic • Present the lesson • Present the material (lecture, video, reading, demonstration etc.) • Provide learner guidance • Allow students to practice what has been learned while teacher facilitates/oversees • Elicit performance • Give students a task to do independently to see if they have learned what was taught • Provide feedback • Let students know how they did on the task • Provide specific feedback • Assess performance • Evaluate the student's performance on the independent task • Enhance retention and transfer • Provide activities and strategies which will help the students apply the skills that they have learned to new situations
