What is the caste system??? • In Hindu society, each person has a certain social role or position in life • The caste system is a hierarchy • Performing good deeds and following their assigned code of behaviour will determine if they have the right to be born at a higher level in their next life
Caste system 1) Brahmins: • Caste on the top of the hierarchy • Priestly caste • Their role is to teach in matters of faith and they leads most key rituals
Caste system 2) Kshatriyas • Warrior caste • If you belong to this caste, your role is to protect the people and run a fair government
Caste system 3) Vaishyas • Producer caste • Role is to take care of the economic needs of the community • If you belong to this caste, you are likely a trader, merchant, farmer, artist or business person
Caste system: 4) Sudras • Lowest caste • Their role is to serve the 3 higher castes by doing menial work (for example, unskilled workers and servants belong to this caste.
Caste system: 5) Untouchables • Outsiders caste • May not interact in any with members from other castes • Their role is to do the dirtiest work and live apart in small communities
guru: • Term for teacher or master • Responsible for sharing their knowledge with their followers
puja: • Puja is a religious ceremony in which one salutes and worships the deity of one's choice. • Puja is a form of connecting with the supreme through an expression of devotion. In puja, the worshiper cultivates a deep, personal relationship with the deity
Upanishads: • Hindu holy scriptures that focus on prayers, elements of nature and animal sacrifices
