The Songhai Empire. The Songhai had a simple caste system that was more centralized than Mali. The Empire was divided into 5 provinces with their own goverener , courts, and paid tribute. Islam was used to reinforce authority, but was not forced on everyone.

The Songhai Empire • The Songhai had a simple caste system that was more centralized than Mali. • The Empire was divided into 5 provinces with their own goverener, courts, and paid tribute. • Islam was used to reinforce authority, but was not forced on everyone. • Scholars traveled to the University of Sankore and in the City of Djenne’s university to study theology, law, rhetoric, astronomy, history, and geography. • They traded on the Niger River trading gold, kola nuts, and slaves for salt, cloth, cowries, and horses. • Their technology included canoes, swords, spears, arrows, and an army.
