  1. Getting Onboard with PRAXIS PRAXIS A Dozen Smokin’ Hints and Tips Susan Neel Georgia State University Gayle Veltman Wichita State University

  2. Start Early! • Call ETS right after the test registration deadline to get counts per group (approximately 3 weeks before the test date). • This will help you get a jump start on securing enough rooms, staff, and materials.

  3. To Do List • Have a task list of things that need to be done before the test. • This will ensure that you don’t forget to do all the preparations necessary for your particular test site.

  4. Hiring • Hire an Associate Supervisor (AS) who will work with you throughout the day rather than administer tests in a room – this is approved by ETS. • Hire experienced staff to administer and proctor Praxis exams, if possible.

  5. Color Coding • Color code as much as you can: rosters, Test Supervisor (TS) worksheets, material bags, AS Report Forms, etc. • With all the paperwork and materials involved with Praxis, it will help you find and sort things quickly.

  6. Supplies • Make items that are helpful to your particular situation. • Things like permanent nametags for staff, baggies of testing essentials for each room, clipboards, and room specific seat charts make the day go smoother for you and your staff.

  7. Spreadsheet • Create a spreadsheet of tests, staff, counts, and rooms by session. • This helps keep track of who-what-and-when for the day.

  8. Notebook • Put together a notebook or folder of signs which are laminated or in sheet protectors. • Signs are easy to post and reusable!

  9. Create • Create your own forms, such as staffing assignments, info to post on board, roster additions, voucher, signs, etc. that are quick and easy to use and are big time savers before, during, and after the test.

  10. Call ETS • Tell candidates to call ETS when they are dissatisfied with your decision regarding invalid identification, etc. • Rather than the TS calling ETS, which ties up the phone line and takes up your time, tell test-takers to call (they usually have cell phones). • Then ask them to let you talk with ETS personnel, if ETS wants to override your decision.

  11. Cell Phones • Have a cell phone policy which is consistent with Praxis guidelines and give it to each test staff member that morning. • Consider writing a script for them to read to test-takers.

  12. Reorganization • Reorganize materials after the test. • This may be hard to make yourself do! • Sort paperwork and keep or toss forms as appropriate. • Get basic materials and reusable items organized for the next test, since it will be here before you know it.

  13. Be Nice to Yourself • …and Staff. • Gayle brings and/or pays for snacks in the morning and arranges for lunch to be brought to the site (Dutch treat) for all-day staff. • Susan makes plans to go out to dinner at a nice restaurant after the test.
