What is Expected of a Bonita Vista Middle School Student • Come to school daily and on-time • Come to school prepared to learn • Good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast • Schoolwork complete & reviewed by adult • All necessary school supplies & books • Follow the rules of the school and classroom

Minimum Academic Expectations Meet the BVM middle school promotion requirements: • Pass a minimum of 21 credits, which includes • A passing grade (A,B,C,D) in all math and English classes Note: Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average in both scholarship and citizenship to play high school sports and participate in many high school activities.

  5. Compact for Success Middle School Benchmarks/ Expectations • Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average (B average) • Earn at least a “C” in scholarship in all English and Math Classes • Pass the EPT (English Placement Test) & ELM (Entry Level Math) tests at SDSU

  6. How to be Successful in School • Daily Routine • Organized • Time Management • Homework & Study • Seek Help • Supportive Parents

  7. Daily Routine • Regular bedtime and wake-up time • Regular study time & location • Nutritious breakfast, lunch & dinner • Fun/ relax/ extra-curricular time

  8. Organization • Utilize Student Daily Planner • Record daily assignments and upcoming test and project due dates • Textbooks & supplies readily available • Backpack, locker & desk at home • Tip: regularly clean-out & organize locker, backpack, and home study area

Time Management • Students need time to: • Sleep & eat • Homework/ study time • Fun, relax time, and/ or extra-curricular activities (soccer, piano…) • When time is not managed we try to squeeze too many things in too little time or we don’t get them done • How we use time reflects our priorities • Closely monitor the biggest teenage time users: telephone, chat rooms, video games, television, “hanging out”/ un-monitored time.

  10. Time Management Activity • For one-week have child keep a log of all daily activities • Log everything: sleep, eat, school, phone, computer, television, study, soccer practice, etc • At the end of the week, review log and discuss positives & and areas that need improvement

Homework Time • Have a regular place for homework • Comfortable: chair, desk, lighting • Neat & Quiet • Well Supplied: planner, textbooks,pens and pencils, dictionary, thesaurus, calculator, etc • Have a homework routine • Find the best time (early morning, late afternoon, etc.) • Take short but regular breaks

Homework Time • Set Goals, Prioritize and Plan Ahead • Keep a “To Do” list and a monthly calendar • Each week assist student in planning upcoming assignments, tests, doctor appointments, soccer practice, etc • Homework every day • Students who do best in school study every day • Students can always get ahead, review, and re-read the text. • Adult should review assignments, verify completion of assignments, and assist student with review for tests.

  13. Successful Students Seek Help Tutoring: • Talk to a parent, teacher or counselor • Attend tutoring • Before/ After-School tutoring • Advisory tutoring • High School private tutoring (paid) • Lunch tutoring • Saturday & Friday tutoring • Tutoring handout available

Successful Students Seek Help Personal/ Social/ Emotional Issues • Today’s students can have many “stressors” in their lives. • Like adults, stress can lead to negative outcomes at home and school. • Successful students talk to an adult (parent, teacher, counselor) and seek advice when in need.

Involved Parents--Parents are teachers too! • Talk to your child about school and everyday events • Model positive behaviors • Keep track of important dates (BVM website) • Attend school sponsored parent nights • Monitor student’s progress in school • Daily homework planner • Weekly Progress Reports • Teacher’s website (schoolnotes.com) • Parent/ Teacher/ Counselor Conferences • Shadow student for-the-day

What not to do: Parent: “How was school today?” Student: “Fine.” Parent: “ Do you have any homework?” Student: “I finished it during advisory.” A Better way to find out what’s going on: Parent: “What did you do in World Cultures today?” Student: “ We learned about longitude and latitude.” Parent: “Can you explain the difference to me?” Student: “Let me get my homework and I will show you.” Parent/ Child Homework Conversation

Working TogetherReport Cards • Two semesters in school year • Two progress reports & 1 final report card per semester. • Report card dates: • Early September (progress) • Late October (progress • December-Final Grades (mailed) • Mid February (progress) • Late March (progress) • Last day of school- Final Grades (mailed)

Working TogetherParent & Teacher Conference • When to schedule a teacher conference. • When requested by teacher(s) • When student has a D or F grade on progress report • Conferences can often be held via telephone or in-person during teacher’s prep period. • Teachers can also be contacted via email • Conferences should be held well in advance of final report card (at least 5 weeks prior)

Working TogetherParent & Teacher Conference • Discuss class expectations & standards • Discuss student’s performance • Class participation • Homework completion • Test, quizzes, written assignments, projects • Discuss areas of success & areas for improvement • Discuss support available: tutoring, study buddy, schoolnotes.com, etc.

Working TogetherParent & Counselor Conference When to schedule a counselor conference: • To begin early preparation for high school, the Compact for Success and other post-high school career/ college options. • Student demonstrating pattern of difficulty with school • More than 1 failing grade • Student not completing homework • Student demonstrating pattern of low citizenship or frequent office referrals • Concerns with student’s emotional well being

  21. Counseling Secretary Contact BVM Counseling Center (619) 397-2220 • Schedule teacher conferences • Schedule student “shadow” • Arrange for homework for long-term absences 3+ days.

  22. Parents are the Most Important Teacher • Even though your child is expressing their independence, they still need your support and guidance. • Talk to your child about school and his/ her personal life • Praise your child’s effort and achievement
