  3. Definition • ad·jec·tive  ( j k-t v) • n. Abbr. a. or adj. • 1. The part of speech that modifies a noun or other substantive by limiting, qualifying, or specifying and distinguished in English morphologically by one of several suffixes, such as -able, -ous, -er, and -est, or syntactically by position directly preceding a noun or nominal phrase.

  4. Adjectives… describe nouns. The friendly ranger told us which way to go. We walked through the flowery hillside until noon. We saw a huge, scary bear. The little girl’s blonde hair stood straight up!

  5. Tell me more. Adjectives describe the size, quantity, condition, shape, and appearance of nouns. Adjectives describe the time and feelings of nouns.

  6. Adjectives describe appearance or condition. The lovely tower glowed against the night sky. The cute, red bicycle leaned against the wooden fence. The small, yellow car had plenty of power to race down the highway.

  7. Also… adjectives tell the quantity of nouns. How many leaves are on this tree? many How many pears are on this tree? one 1. 2. How much liquid is in each cup? There is one empty cup and one full cup.

  8. What else? Adjectives compare quantities, sizes or temperatures. The extreme heat made it difficult to work outside. The pink liquid is in the biggest bottle. The smallest bottle has the orange liquid. We will use the larger tomato in the salad.
