  14. Summary The Hispanic population increased from 9.6 million in 1970 to 50.5 million in 2010. The Hispanic population accounted for over half of the 27.3 million increase in the total population of the United States between 2000 and 2010. More than two-thirds of the Hispanic growth between 2000 and 2010 was due to natural increase. Over half of the Hispanic population resided in just three states: California, Texas and Florida. The Mexican origin population is still numerically and proportionally the largest Hispanic group.
