Blood • Blood is made up of 4 parts • Plasma: liquid part of blood, mostly water, nutrients • White Blood Cell (WBC): fights infection • Red Blood Cell (RBC): carries oxygen and CO2 • Platelets: clot blood
Red Blood Cells • Hemoglobin – makes blood red • Absorbs oxygen • Made in the bone marrow • Have no nucleus, live about 4 months
White Blood Cells 1% of all blood cells Protect the body against microbes that cause disease
Platelets • Cell fragments that help the blood to clot
Videos Heart video PBS • What is the job of the circulatory system? • What does blood circulate that the body needs? • How does the circulatory system keep each cell in an organism alive and healthy
Do Now: Feb 5 • List the 4 parts of blood and what they do • Platelets • Clot blood • WBC • Fight infection • RBC • Carry oxygen and CO2 • Plasma • Carries water and nutrients
The Heart • 6 major parts of the heart • 2 atria; left and right • 2 ventricles; left and right • 2 major valves; bicuspid, tricuspid
3 Types of Vessels • Arteries – take blood Away from the heart • Veins – bring blood back to heart. • Capillaries – Connect arteries and veins, bring blood to the cells, only one cell thick
ARTERIES Have strong, muscular walls The inner layer is very smooth so that the blood can flow easily http://hes.ucf.k12.pa.us/gclaypo/circdia.html
VEINS Valves are located inside the veins. The valves only allow blood to move in one direction. http://hes.ucf.k12.pa.us/gclaypo/circdia.html
Valves Close up of heart valveHeart sounds are made by the valvesas they open and close http://hes.ucf.k12.pa.us/gclaypo/circdia.html
Path of Blood • deoxygenated blood enters the right atrium • Goes to right ventricle, pumped to lungs • Oxygenated blood returns to the heart entering the left atrium • Goes to left ventricle • Out through the Aorta to the rest of the body
Do Now: Feb 6 • What side of the heart contains oxygenated blood?
Heart videos • Blood flow • Heart transplant surgery • Circulation station • Another movie • Brainpop
Blood Doping • Lance Armstrong interview • Questions: • What is blood doping? • How does it benefit an athlete? • Describe the two methods of blood doping. • What is EPO? • What are some of the risks? • How can it be detected?
