KS-NSB-1 Preliminary Design Review KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Presentation Overview • Introduction and System Overview • Main Payload • Software Engineering • Continuous Wave Beacon • Camera Package • Airframe • Mass and Power Budgets • Schedule
Overview Samir Rawashdeh KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Intro and System Overview Mission Goals and Desired Outcomes: • To learn how to build, launch and track balloons. • To learn how to design a system as a team, implement it and deploy it. • To test technologies for future missions. • Training the KySat08 team on relevant technologies and design processes.
Intro and System Overview Project Circumstances: • Distributed Team • Three weeks to design, build, and integrate
Main Payload Jason Bratcher KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Software Engineering Nate Rhodes KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Flight Software Overview • Space Express on a balloon • Same organization / structure as SE • Instead of “read transmit, read transmit” now “read store, read store” since we plan on recovering the payload • Update drivers (I2C, temp sensor, SPI) to current KySat-1 versions
Data Format • No radio transmission, therefore no MIME encoding needed • Write data directly SD card • Use SPI drivers from KySat-1 • Use file system interface from KySat-1
Summary • Use organization from SE • Reading of sensor arrays • Packaging data • Use drivers from KySat-1 • I2C bus • SPI bus • File system
Continuous Wave Beacon Samir Rawashdeh KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
CW Beacon • Requirements • Transmit call sign and pressure data. • Operate at high altitude. • Function as a secondary tracking system. • Transmit for 3-4 hours.
Cricketsat • Provided by Bob Twiggs • 5mW transmitter • 555 timer • Easy to modify for use with pressure sensor and antennas. • Flight heritage
Beacon Keyer • Easy to build, Low cost • Designed by David Robinson who has agreed to help us with programming. • PIC 505 microcontroller
Antenna • 2 half-wave tape measure dipoles • Little cost to build. • Connected via coaxial cable.
Conclusion • Antenna • 35cm mounted vertical • 1m mounted horizontal • Beacon will be recorded and spectral analysis tools used to determine altitude. • This method is easier and requires less time than encoding altitude data on the signal.
Camera Package Anthony or Ty KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Canon A570 IS Specs • Can take photos at multiple resolutions: • 3072 x 2304 (7.1MP) • 1600 x 1200 • Price: ~$174 • Has documented flight heritage with CHDK firmware add-on.
Calculations for 3072 x 2304 • Photo size: ~3MB • 2000MB (SD card) / 3MB = 667 photos • 4 hours (est. flight time) = 240 min • 240 min / 667 photos = 1 photo / 22 s
Calculations for 1600 x 1200 • Photo size: ~.32MB • 2000MB / .32MB = 6250 photos • 4 hours = 240 min • 240 min / 6250 photos = 1 photo / 2.3 s
Conclusion • 2 cameras • One mounted on +Z (to Earth) • One mounted on –X (to horizon) • CHDK script settings • Reset. • Set aperture to wide angle. • Set camera focus to manual:infinity.
Conclusion (cont.) • Set JPEG compression to superfine. • Turn off display to save battery life. • Set camera to take a photo every 30 s. • Retain default maximum resolution (3072 x 2304, 7.1MP)
Airframe David Jones KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Basic Airframe Concept • Polystyrene sheet • Provides thermal resistance from outer surface, structural rigidity, and shock resistance. • Multi Layer Insulation (MLI) • Provides several layers of thermal resistance to keep the outer airframe surface warm.
Basic Airframe Concept • Foam rubber landing bag • To protect our expensive instrumentation from impact. • Outer abrasion jacket • Rip-stop Nylon cover keeps circuits dry, protects MLI, and provides a means for attaching link lines. • Looks great too.
Integrated Payload • Drag disk to minimize spinning will allow for better photographic imagery.
Skills needed for assembly • Exacto blading • Hot gluing • Drilling • Bolting • Sewing • Should take one day.
Mass and Power Budgets Jason Bratcher KS-NSB-1 PDR Lexington, KY 30 June 2008 http://www.kysat.com
Power Budget cont. • This leaves plenty of leeway for surprises
