  2. 1. Write the 6 chapter objectives found on page 182. • 1. Describe personal qualities that indicate a desire to succeed on the job. • 2. Explain guidelines for understanding one’s role as an employee. • 3. Demonstrate how to handle workplace situations with an appropriate attitude.

  3. 4. Identify ways to prepare for a performance evaluation. • 5. Describe strategies that can improve an employee’s chances of advancement. • 6. Discuss guidelines for leaving a job.

  4. Define the Key Terms. • 1. Work ethic—a sense of obligation to work hard and to complete tasks efficiently and well. • 2. Initiative—willingness to do what needs to be done without being asked. • 3. Flexibility—willingness to adapt to new or changing requirements.

  5. 4. Workplace culture—the attitudes, behavior, habits, and expectations of a company’s owners and employees. • 5. Constructive criticism—feedback that suggests ways you can learn and improve. • 6. Continuing education—courses geared toward working adults. • 7. Mentor—someone who acts as a teacher and a guide.

  6. Answer the following questions. • 1. How can one tell whether an employee has a strong work ethic? • Employees recognizes obligation to work hard and complete tasks well, is motivated to do his or her best and help the company, doesn’t need constant supervision, and shows initiative.

  7. 2. How do employees show that they have initiative? • Employees show that they have initiative by being willing to do what needs to be done without being asked.

  8. 3. Why is flexibility particularly valued in the modern workplace? • Because today’s workplace is fast-paced, it needs employees who can think on their feet and switch priorities if necessary. Workers may also need to learn new technology and new skills.

  9. 4. As a new employee, what would you need to find out in order to understand your role within the company? • Your job responsibilities. • Who your immediate supervisor is. • With whom you will be working. • Whom you should ask about minor problems. • Working-place culture.

  10. 5. What does the workplace culture tell you about the place where you work? • The workplace culture tells you about the attitudes, behavior, habits, and expectations of the company’s owners and employees.

  11. 6. What are two advantages of having a positive attitude in the workplace? • You’re more likely to succeed to your work. It will help you handle difficult situations.

  12. 7. Why should you not try to hide mistakes you make at work? • Doing so can cause additional problems and might lead people to distrust you.

  13. 8. What is the goal of constructive criticism? • The goal of constructive criticism is to help the persona learn and improve.

  14. 9. What should an employee do to prepare for a performance evaluation? • Jot down questions you want to ask and ideas you want to discuss. • Think about your recent job performance, including whether and how you achieved the goals set for you and how you handled. Challenges.

  15. 10. What are continuing education courses and why might it be advisable to take them? • They are courses geared toward working adults. They allow employees gain skills that can help in advancing in the job.

  16. 11. How might a mentor help you advance in your career? • A mentor can give support and advice, help you understand the workplace culture, suggest ways to improve skills, and introduce you to others who can help you advance.

  17. 12. Why is it advisable to leave a job on good terms? • You might want the employer for a reference, or you might want to return and work for this employer in the future.
