  2. As an employee associated with the city, there are numerous guidelines by which one must adhere. As you may be aware, adherence to ethical guidelines regarding gifts and entertainment play an integral role in maintaining an ethically sound organization. There are many aspects that go into ethically accepting or denying a gift.

  3. Prohibited Sources ( you should not accept gifts/entertainment from): • Anyone doing business with your organization. • Anyone attempting to conduct business with your organization. • Individuals seeking official organizational action. • Anyone regulated by the organization. • Anyone with interests that can be affected by employee duties.

  4. If the gift is a tangible, non-perishable item, you must return it to the outside source, or reimburse the source for the current market value of the gift. • If the item is perishable, make an effort to contact your organizations ethics official to determine whether or not to give the item to charity, share the gift among the office, or have the gift destroyed. • If the gift is intangible, as in some form of entertainment, you must reimburse the outside source the market value of the entertainment.   6. The 3 Don’ts of Accepting Gifts: • Never accept a gift that influences one’s duties. • Never solicit an individual or organization for gifts. • Never accept gifts so frequently that it appears your position is being used for own personal gain.

  7. How to deal with real dilemmas There are numerous ethical dilemmas when dealing with gifts from outside agencies and individuals. While the information covered in this module should sufficiently prepare you for work with the city, there will undoubtedly be ethically intrinsic incidents that will arise during your employment. During such incidents where this module cannot provide a concrete answer; your ethics official should be able to provide you with one.
