Disadvantage of Technology Transfer • In the short run-High Cost • A large number of managers (middle and high level) need to be transferred to the JV at the beginning of the business • High training cost However, we suggest company Z to call back its middle level managers when the JV goes on the track
Disadvantage of Technology Transfer • Difficulty arising from the incompatibility of cultures of the partners • Technology transfer involves a lot of human elements such as management skills, training programs and etc. • The company need to put much effort in blending the culture of two partners to smooth out the transfer process.
Advantage of Technology Transfer • Increase efficiency • Our partner, a government owned firm • Bureaucracy, low efficiency, low productivity • Advanced management skills transferred to the joint venture, the efficiency of the JV will be improved.
Advantage of Technology Transfer • Maintain the standard and quality of service. • Quality control system • Ensure that the service quality in Shanghai is the same as that in Hong Kong. • Cost effectiveness in the long run • In the long run, the transfer cost can be covered by the gain in the improved performance of the company.
Conclusion • We suggest Weber’s Co. to wholly transfer all its technologies. • The local partner need to master these skills to ensure the service quality. • Protect the technology and avoid imitation by outsiders • sign contracts & make agreements • E.g. cannot use tailor-made software outside companies & not related to Weber’s Co.
