  6. Referral from GP • I wish to refer this child, 3 yrs 8 mths. Mum is very concerned about his behaviour. The Early Childhood Service has major difficulties with his behaviour including physically lashing out at other children. • Mother tells me the staff were nearly at the point of excluding the child from the kindergarten. • Mother is distressed as feels there was no collaborative approach to try and rectify the situation.

  7. contd • Child is strong willed and can be difficult at times but he does not hit at home and parents have clear behavioural boundaries. • Was buddied with a designated teacher which did lead to an improvement and things are not so bad at present. He does seem to respond best to his favourite teacher.

  8. Next referral • Child walks through others’ play areas • Does not seem to notice others • Plays with only a few items – likes to have them at all times

  9. Behaviour • We want to know: • What the behaviours are • Are they at home and centre • What helps • What hinders • Harm to self, harm to others • Have teachers attended IY?

  10. Incredible Years • IY Parenting • IY Teacher

  11. Communication • want to know • How child follows instructions • How child constructs sentences (me want ca- I want car) • Speech – sounds: only if very unintelligible. • Much More Than Words

  12. Learning • How child presents alongside peers • What parents see • what have you noticed?

  13. Hearing • Hearing and Signs of Hearing Difficulties • Hearing is a critical part of a child’s development. Even a mild or fluctuating hearing loss can affect a child’s speech and language development and learning. • Early detection makes early treatment and prevention possible.

  14. Other referrals The child who does not socialise Who does not relate to others (adult or child The child who obsesses over specific toys The child who doesn't talk

  15. What will we do? • We would prefer referrals at 3 years rather than 4 years particularly with communication. • We look at social, emotional, physical, learning, behaviour and communication • Happy for you to phone to discuss first?
