Open Water Near Airports • Notification is required for creating, or enlarging ponds or other impounded open water within 5 miles of public use airport (Hwys spec 208.2.2) • Safety of Flight concerns. Primarily birds. In 2007 there were 7,439REPORTED bird strikes and over $628 million dollars of damage each year. • Federal Aviation Administration rule states that areas of open water are considered a hazard without detailed investigation, when located within 5,000’ (1-mile) of airports serving piston aircraft, and within 10,000’ (2-miles) of airports serving turbine aircraft. (AC 150/5200-33B) • Open water bodies within 5 miles should be investigated for wildlife hazard potential.
Open Water Near Airports • Notification is to the Public Use airport as well as to the WisDOT Bureau of Aeronautics as spelled out in 208.2.2 • Two copies of the notification is preferred for the information submitted to the BOA • Basic contact information & details including maps etc of the location of the proposed site as well as finished reclamation conditions are needed. • BOA will review and coordinate with other agencies to properly review the proposal and respond with any recommendations
