  2. Democratic Reform in Britain • Urbanization and industrialization • Many called for political reforms and better living conditions • Britain’s Parliament: House of Lords and House of Commons • 1800s: British government was not a true democracy

  3. Democratic Reform in Britain • Reform Bill of 1832 • middle class men could now vote • Chartist Movement • Eventually Parliament will meet the workers’ demands and will permit working-class men to vote (1867) • After 1884, most adult males had the right to vote

  4. Suffrage for Women • By 1890, no women to vote • As more men got their right to vote, women will fight for the same • Women voting = too radical • Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) • Successes were gradual

Irish Nationalism • 1801: Ireland formally joined to Britain • Mid-1800s: Push for independence • Home rule: local control over internal matters • 1916: Irish nationalists attack British officers • Irish Republican Army (IRA) formed-an unofficial military force seeking independence for Ireland • 1921: home rule granted to southern Ireland • Irish Free State • Northern Ireland remained a part of Great Britain • 1949: Irish Free State declared itself the independent Republic of Ireland

Nineteenth-Century Progress • Advances in Medicine: • Germ Theory of Disease: provided a better understanding of how diseases were caused and ways to prevent and treat illnesses • Steps taken to make cities, sewage systems, and hospitals cleaner • Advances in Science: • Accepted belief: idea of special creation • Charles Darwin: evolution and natural selection

Nineteenth-Century Progress • Advances in Chemistry and Physics -Dmitri Mendeleev: Periodic Table -Marie and Pierre Curie: radioactivity • Rise of Mass Culture -Earlier periods: art, music, and theater were enjoyed by wealthy -1900s: entertainment expands to a wider audience -new pursuits in art, movies, performances, and sporting events

Summation • Great Britain: • gradual democratic change; voting for all male homeowners; problems with Irish and suffragettes • France: • Democratic change: sudden and violent; Congress of Vienna reinstated the Bourbon Monarchy – revolution to overthrow; 2nd Republic established complete male suffrage; Napoleon's nephew est. a 2nd empire – loses war w/ Prussia & forced to give up Alsace-Lorraine; 3rd Republic est.
