  2. Ben Johannson • Ben Johannsson showed up at the doctors office with multiple symptoms including: fluid retention, abdominal swelling and tenderness in the abdomens. After running multiple tests the doctor found that the whites of Bens eyes where yellow, Ben had low blood sugar, a high blood cell count and high calcium levels in the blood.

  3. Ben Johannsson • Ben is a 37 year old male. • Ben has a history of being a heavy alcoholic, who experiments with cocaine time to time. • Ben has maintained his weight. • Ben doesn’t smoke.

  4. The Disease • Ben has liver cancer. • Liver cancer is a cancer that originates in the liver. • Cancer is the growth and spread of unhealthy cells.

  5. The symptoms • Ben had fluid retention which caused abdominal swelling which caused tenderness in the abdomens. • One of the side effects of liver cancer was jaundice which is another diseases which causes the whites of your eyes and your skin to turn yellow. • Ben also had low blood sugar, high blood cell count, and high calcium levels.

  6. Causes • The causes of liver cancer are still unknown. But the known risk factors are: • hepatitis B • cirrhosis of the liver • diabetes mellitus • exposure to toxins • Smoking • Alcohol • Drugs The most likely reason as to why Ben got liver cancer was because he was an alcoholic, who experimented with cocaine.

  7. Diagnosis

  8. Sample testing • Blood Tests-This will show that the patient has high amounts of various enzymes which is a sign of liver cancer. • Liver Sample-This will show if Ben has high levels of AST or high levels of ALT which is very common if the patient has liver cancer.

  9. Imaging • MRI-Doing an MRI will show if Ben has a lump (tumor) on his liver. • CT Scan-This will also show if Ben has a lump (Tumor) on his liver. • Abdominal Ultrasound-Doing this test will see if more sound waves rebound off of the liver meaning the liver is larger than it should be.

  10. Scoping • There is no way to scope inside the liver due to the fact that the liver is not connected to the esophagus.

  11. Clinical Notes

  12. Survival Rate Stage 1(5 year survival rate) -28% of people survive this stage. -Tumor has not grown into the blood vessels of the liver. -Cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs.

  13. Survival Rate Stage 2 -7% of people to survive this stage. -Tumor has grown into the blood vessels of the liver or there are multiple tumors each smaller than 5cm in size. -Cancer has not spread to lymph nodes or distant organs.

  14. Survival Rate Stage 3 -2% of people survive this stage. -Multiple tumors have grown more than 5 cm in size. -Cancer has spread into nearby organs.

  15. Stages of Liver Cancer

  16. Treatment • Surgery: Liver transplant in the early stages of liver cancer of removal of the tumors. • Chemotherapy: Uses drugs to eliminate cancer cells. • Radiotherapy: Uses high energy radiation to destroy cancer cells.

Recommendations and Community Support Scans such as ultrasound, CT Scan or MRI scan can help. -Eat in small amounts and avoid fatty foods. -See a Gastroenterologist(a doctor who specializes in the digestive track and liver). Cancer support groups such as the Canadian Cancer society and cancer support community can all help reduce anxiety and provide comfort.
