Trends • Growth of motorisation and increase of mobility, stabilisation of freight transport, rapid growth of road traffic, very significant increase in air transport (EU membership and LCC’s) – 2004/2003 – 25% • Modal shift from rail transport to road transport • Decreasing share of public transport in cities, but still over 50 % • Sea and inland water transport – stable W. Main problems • Congestion especially on national roads and in urban areas – perceived versus real!! • Growing negative impact on the environment and society – growing awareness! • People’s health and lives are at risk, especially in road transport • Poor condition of infrastructure, especially railways and road infrastructure not prepared for heavy trucks – 115kN/axle • Low rail efficiency and competitiveness W.
