Today • Group discussion and team debate.
Team debate • You will be divided into a team of 3 people. • Your team will argue for ONE side of an issue. • The team opposite from you will argue the other side.
Team debate • One team = argue for. “Affirmative” • Other team: Argue against. “Negative”
Team debate • Part 1: You will be given 10 minutes to work with your team to develop your ideas. • Make some notes to help you remember and organize your ideas.
Team debate • Part 2: Using the notes from your discussion: • - You have 10 minutes to prepare your opening statements. • - Choose which member of your team will give the opening statement.
Team debate • Part 3 (a): Opening statements. • “Affirmative” team will go first. • - You have up to 5 minutes to present. • “Negative” team: Listen carefully to the affirmative team’s argument. You should write down notes about what they say so you can argue against it later.
Team debate • Part 3 (b): Opening statements. • “Negative” team will go next. • - You have up to 5 minutes to present. • “Affirmative” team: Listen carefully to the affirmative team’s argument. You should write down notes about what they say so you can argue against it later.
Team debate • Part 4: Prepare counter-argument. • You will have 10 minutes to discuss how you will reply to the other team’s opening statement. • Use the notes you made during the other team’s opening statements.
