Primate Evolution. Primate – member of the mammalian order that includes prosimians , monkeys, apes & humans. First evolved about 50 million years ago ( mya ). Two Key Traits: Grasping hands and feet (opposable thumb) Forward oriented eyes. Human Evolution.

  1. Primate Evolution • Primate – member of the mammalian order that includes prosimians, monkeys, apes & humans. • First evolved about 50 million years ago (mya). • Two Key Traits: • Grasping hands and feet (opposable thumb) • Forward oriented eyes

  2. Human Evolution • Hominid – primates that walk upright on two legs. (Human Ancestors) • First appeared on earth about 5-7 mya.

  3. Australopithecus afarensis • Lived 3.5 to 2.9 MYA -Better known as “Lucy” -walked upright -Small brain case with a large face. -Chimpanzee-like features -Not part of the “Homo” Genus

  4. Homo habilis Lived 2.4 to 1.5 MYA -Means “handy man” -First species to make tools -Lived at the same time as Homo erectus (that came after them)

  5. Homo Erectus Lived 1.8 to 300,000 years ago -Longest living species that we will study -First to use fire -Very simple skull, but very similar to modern humans.

  6. Homo sapien- Neanderthalensis Lived 230,000 to 30,000 years ago -Lived at the same time at modern humans -Short and powerful with the largest skull -Adapted to live in cold climates -First to show social development like caring for their sick and burying their dead.

  7. Homo sapien - modern • Lived 120,000 years ago to present day -You are part of this species -Made elaborate tools of bone, antler and ivory -Items made of stone and wood -Produced artwork and cave paintings -language and culture.
