  3. Introduction • The aim of the JISC project is to enhance retention and attainment, particularly with 1st Year Undergrads • JISC project (Building Capacity) runs from March 2010 – March 2011

  5. Student Retention • Yorke & Longden (2008) identified these reasons for dropping out: • disliking the location of the university; • expectations of the chosen course of study; • difficulties making friends.

  8. Where’s the student voice? • Where does the student voice crop up in our University? • Students themselves can be the best support for one another • PLUS technology can now facilitate this.

  9. JISC recommendations • Our literature review conducted by Mary Ashworth: • Institutional systems responses: • Early access to institutional systems e.g. Blackboard (expectations of course) • Early access to one another e.g. Ning at Bradford (making friends)

  10. JISC recommendations • We have to be mindful of how diverse our student group is in terms of • Age • Background • Digital literacy

  11. JISC recommendations • Engagement of students through technology: • Twoler Project (University of Westminster) • TAG Project (UCLAN)

It’s never been easier! • What are we going to do? • Using Twoler experiences of engaging students we are inviting students to share their stories • Compile a website/online area where these stories can be accessed by everyone coming to UofC • Ultimately maybe extending this so that everyone can access it (like TAG).
