  2. Intro Jesus called the word of God “Scripture,” and used them synonymously Jn. 10:35 35. "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), Mt. 22:29 (Mt. 22:24) 29. But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. Lk. 4:21 (Lk. 4:17; Is. 61:1-2) 21. And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

Intro How one treats the Scriptures reflects how they revere God • Jer. 36:23: King Jehoiakim (36:1) cut and burned the scroll of God’s word. • Jer. 36:27-32: God commanded a new scroll be written. God’s word endured! To emphasize that Scriptures are the word of God, Paul personifies them as a noun! • Gal. 3:8, 22: The Scripture foresaw and preached, not was preached from! • Jn. 1:1-3: Jesus is called the “Word,” thus He can be called the “Scripture” too! The way we treat the Scriptures reflects the way we treat the Son of God! Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

  4. The Scriptures Are the Source for Guidance Jn. 10:30-36 30. "I and the Father are one." 31. The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him. 32. Jesus answered them, "I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?" 33. The Jews answered Him, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God." 34. Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I SAID, YOU ARE GODS'? 35. "If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36. do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? He answered their dispute from Scripture, their own Law, as authoritative and binding! (“Cannot be broken”) Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

The Scriptures Are the Source for Guidance Jesus met Satan’s temptations with Scripture • Mt. 4:1-11: Three times Jesus used the Scriptures to defeat Satan. • I Pet. 5:8-9: “Resist him, firm in your faith.” Must study to know the Scriptures! As Jesus turned to the Scriptures to answer religious error, they are our source as well! Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

The Scriptures Are Authoritative Both Old and New Testaments are Scripture, and are from God • I Tim. 5:18: Paul quotes from Deut. 25:4 & Lk. 10:7 (Mt. 10:10). • II Pet. 3:14-16: Peter counts Paul’s epistles as Scripture. • II Tim. 3:14-17: The Scriptures are sacred and inspired of God. • II Pet. 1:16-21: Scripture and prophecy are not left to one’s own interpretations. Jn. 10:34-35 • “Has it not been written in your Law…?” • Jesus exercised the authority of Scripture to teach (they should have known) Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

  7. The Scriptures Are Authoritative Recognizing Scriptures as authoritative is essential to Christianity What if no laws concerning measurement? What if no laws governing traffic? What would be final authority in spiritual matters if not Scriptures? What settled the blasphemy issue • Jn. 10:34-36: Jesus pointed to Scripture! Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

The Scriptures Are Authoritative What should settle issues regarding spiritual matters today? • II Tim. 3:16-17: Scriptures make one ready to teach, correct, and train. • Lk. 10:25-29: Jesus had Lawyer answer his own question from Scripture! We teach the “oracles of God” (NKJ) when we speak from the authority of God’s word! (NAS: I Pet. 4:11a) I Pet. 4:11 11. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Attempts to Break Scripture Warnings concerning the word of God: • Peter made the case that God means what He says – II Pet. 2:1-9 • Paul taught God means what He says – Rom. 2:1-11 • Warnings against adding or subtracting – Gal. 1:6-9; II Jn. 9; Rev. 22:18-19 Not only physical attempts (Jer. 36:23), but people reject Scripture as truth • Disbelief is evil and results in condemnation – Jn. 8:24; Heb. 3:12-13 • Unrepentant ones will “perish” for eternity – II Pet. 3:9; Mk. 9:44 • Refusing Christ’s command to be baptized results in no forgiveness of sin – Acts 22:16 Col. 3:6 6. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

Attempts to Break Scripture Some distort (pervert) the Scriptures to their own destruction (II Pet. 3:16) • Some teach a different gospel – Gal. 1:6-9 • Some teach and listen to what they desire to hear – II Tim. 4:3-4 “The Scripture cannot be broken,” meaning the consequences remain the same regardless of what man chooses to do with it! Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

  11. Conclusion The word of God (“Scripture”) will endure forever Mt. 24:35 35. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. I Pet. 1:24-25 (Is. 40:7-8) 24. For, "ALL FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, AND ALL ITS GLORY LIKE THE FLOWER OF GRASS. THE GRASS WITHERS, AND THE FLOWER FALLS OFF, 25. BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you. Jn. 12:48 48. "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. Conclusion Christ is the “Word,” “Scripture” and we will be held accountable how we treat Him • Scriptures are source for guidance; Jesus is source of salvation through obedience – Heb. 5:9 • Scriptures are basis for authority; Jesus is source for authority – II Jn. 9 (Mt. 7:21-23) • Scriptures can be rejected; to reject them is to reject Christ – Jn. 12:48 Christ declared, “The Scripture cannot be broken!” Do you recognize its authority and obey the word of God? Do you seek to break or reject the word of God? Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

  13. Conclusion Judgment will bring reward and punishment as outlined in the Scriptures! The consequences both good and bad will take place according to our attitude towards the Scriptures – How do you treat the word of God? Like David (Ps. 119:47-48)? Like Jehoiakim (Jer. 36:23)? Scriptures: "Cannot Be Broken"

  14. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Child: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
