  1. Mapping, Data Dissemination, The Web & Interoperability Deborah Lee Soltesz and Trent Hare

  2. Standards and Interoperability • The ability for disparate systems to exchange information • Web Interoperability: web pages are viewable using any standard browser on a personal computer, portable device, or other appliance • Semantic Web: uniform, machine-to-machine data interchange • Web Services: uniform, machine-to-machine communication, interaction, and data interchange

  3. define: Web Services

  4. Web Standards • World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) • Popular Standards: HTML, XML, HTTP, URL • Web Services Standards: WSDL, SOAP • Data interchange standards:RDF, OWL • Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) • Data interchange standards:GML, GeoRSS, GML/Jpeg2000 • Geospatial Web Service Standards:WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS

  5. Benefits to Using Standards • Take advantage of existing desktop and web applications • Reach a wider audience • Make finding and using data easier for users • Simplify sharing our data and maintaining systems • Standards survive the test of time

  6. Open Geospatial Consortium Current Planetary Work in the OGC • Planetary Working Group (charter posted, pending doc. 05-100) • Planetary namespace defined – submitted, to define Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) • Invited to test GML/JPEG2000 for planetary • On the CRS, WCS and WPS working groups Need more planetary members

  7. Priority Planetary OGC Topics • CRS support • Promote Planetary Name Space (i.e. planetary EPSG) • Implement CRS Registry Service • Work with client software to better support planetary CRSs in WMS (but really all -- W*S standards)

  8. GIS = Integrated Geospatial Environmentfor mapping and analysis GIS showing 64 Mars layers; many PDS released -but most datasets required conversion

  9. MORE - Planetary OGC Examples NASA’s Worldwind accessing JPL’s OnMars WMS server (16 bit Png for elevation, Image texture, topography colorized using SLD) 2X

  10. Planetary OGC Examples JMARS (Mars Odyssey THEMIS Mission Planner) By Arizona State University

  11. Planetary OGC Examples Map-a-Planet, PIGWAD, Nomenclature, and UPC USGS Servers

  12. Multiple Servers Working Together

  13. WMS Connect (client builds local layers) Novel approach to use WMS servers

  14. Astro Web Server Interoperability Project • Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature • Planetary feature data availability • Geocoded RSS • Web Feature Service • Planetary Map Index • Catalog of published planetary map • Geocoded RSS • Web Feature Service • Map-a-Planet • Planetary global mosaics • Web Map Service

  15. Astro Web Server Interoperability Project http://planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov/

  16. Astro Web Server Interoperability Project Example: Gaia Map Viewer

  17. Astro Web Server Interoperability Project Example: NASA World Wind access Map-a-Planet

  18. OnEarth to OnMars, OnMoon • Brief Project Highlights • Develop planetary datum and projection and register them with OGC • Develop WMS and WCS servers for Mars and Lunar data • Interoperate with other planetary servers • Propose integration of servers into the Planetary Data System

  19. Cached JPL Server using WorldKit Mdim2.1 Themis
