  2. Sales tax is determined by finding a certain percentage of a purchase price. It is added to your total bill when you make a purchase.

Calculating Sales Tax and Tip – Method One Step One- Convert the percent to a decimal. 5% = .05 Step Two – Multiply the price and the decimal. $15.50 x .05 = .775 round to .78 Step Three- Add the tax or tip to the price. $15.50 + .78 = $16.28

  5. Lindsey went to Best Buy and bought an MP3 Player. If the MP3 Player costs $78.99 and the sales tax was 6.5%, what was her total bill? Step One- 6.5% = .065 Step Two – $78.99 x .065 = $5.13 Step Three- $78.99 + $5.13 = $84.12

  6. Karlie ate lunch with her friends at Salsa. They had a delicious meal that cost $21.23. If they tipped their waitress 18%, what was their total bill? Step One- 18% = . 18 Step Two – $21.23 x .18 = $3.82 Step Three- $21.23 + $3.82 = $25.05

  7. Shayna and Samantha went to Patrick Henry Mall. Shayna bought some earrings for $9.95. If the tax was 5.5%, what was her total bill? Step One- 5.5% = .055 Step Two – $9.95 x .055 = .55 Step Three- $9.95 + .55 = $10.50

  8. Danielle ate dinner with her family at Ruby Tuesdays. Their bill came to $34.20. If they left a 19% tip, how much was their total bill? Step One- 19% = .19 Step Two – $34.20 x .19 = $6.50 Step Three- $34.20 + $6.50 = $40.70

  9. Chastin went to Walmart to buy a new video game. The game costs $51.49 and the tax was 5.5%. What was his total bill? Step One- 5.5% = .055 Step Two – $51.49 x .055 = $2.83 Step Three- $51.49 + $2.83 = $54.32

Calculating Sales Tax and Tip – Method Two Step One- Add the percent and 100%. 100% + 4.5% = 104.5% Step Two – Convert the percent to a decimal. 104.5% = 1.045 Step Three- Multiply the price and the decimal. $3.50 x 1.045 = $3.66

  13. Jordan purchased a new dirt bike. It costs $5500 with 8% sales tax? How much did he spend on his new toy? Step One- 100% + 8% = 108% Step Two – 108% = 1.08 Step Three- $5,500 x 1.08 = $5,940

  14. Sharice and her family had a lovely dinner at Olivia’s restaurant. Their bill came to $71.20. They left their waitress a 17% tip. How much was their total bill, including the tip? Step One- 100% + 17% = 117% Step Two – 117% = 1.17 Step Three- $71.20 x 1.17 = $83.30

  15. Colin bought 3 candy bars at Ollie’s for $1.64. If the sales tax was 7.5%, what was his total bill? Step One- 100% + 7.5% = 107.5% Step Two – 107.5% = 1.075 Step Three- $1.64 x 1.075 = $ 1.76
