Irony in Titanic Important Dates: • 1/28: Early Release (Film Club meeting) • 1/30: Film Club Viewing (4pm-6pm)

  2. 1/26/2009[5 min] WARM UP • Last week we discussed the definition of a real “hero”—someone brave, willing to sacrifice him/herself for other people, etc. • Today, we are reading “Titanic,” a real ship that sunk and killed thousands of people back in the early 1900’s. • Imagine that you are on board the “Titanic” as it is sinking—what are your thoughts/feelings. Would you worry about saving others, or saving yourself? Explain your answer. • Timer

  3. F.Y.I. NO NOTES • Ever heard of a movie or television show that says…. • BASED/INSPIRED BY ACTUAL EVENTS?

  4. F.Y.I. TAKE NOTES • “Based/inspired by actual events” • It is non-fictional (based on some truth), but contains fictional (made up) elements.

  5. Shifting Gears: Non-Fiction NO NOTES • Today, we read “Titanic,” which is a non-fiction story. • While reading, I’ll play clips from Titanic the movie (1997).

  6. Before we begin… TAKE NOTES • There are two types of Irony: • Situational: when expectation does not match with reality. • Dramatic: when the reader knows something BIG and the character does not.

  7. Titanic NO NOTES • Turn to pg. 390 • When we encounter irony, you can laugh…it’s ok!
