  6. 99Dec (Sydney) Meeting Update. Hot Topic 1: Interoperability (a) • Carriers (CEG) push for greater stress • “Top Task” for 2000 • WAP v1.1 “Certification” Process essentially complete • WAP certification = use of WAP Logo • WAP trademark usage guidelines looser • Anyone(WAP member or not) can submit Interoperability-related questions to IOT-Questions@mail.wapforum.org IDO Corporation

  7. Sydney Hot Topic 2 (for CDMA):Sprint PCS paper:WAP over CDMA • Doubts about how well WAP will function over CDMA QNC and packet • Sprint PCS presentation to WPG requested that problem be addressed • Bottom Line: OK to request, but need to commit resources to address problem IDO Corporation

  8. Sydney (/Rome) Hot Topic 3:Future WAP Architecture • 99Dec: Docomo (and Ericsson) hold Workshop • WAP for high 2.5G/3G bandwidth (but applicable to 2G networks) • Stated Goals: • Convergence with wireless-adapted IETF and W3C specs • Maintain WAP service continuity across 2G and 3G networks • Proposed Completion: Dec 2000 • Proposed Liaisons: • 3GPP, ETSI, W3C • 00Feb (Rome): Nokia proposes similar “Convergence WAP Architecture” • includes mention of 3GPP2 IDO Corporation

  9. WAP Work / Ext Group Liaisons Possibility WAP specifications may not function optimally in 3GPP2-related networks IDO Corporation

  10. Liaison Ex: 3GPP/WAP joint Multimedia work Technical Working WAP Outside Groups Forum WAP Forum Architecture Working Group NOKIA Chair: Multimedia Expert Group (MMEG) 3GPP1 Liaison: NOKIA Co-chairs: NOKIA Wireless Applications Group Docomo WAG Multimedia Drafting Committee • Nokia 3GPP/MMEG Liaison is Working Level • Motorola is top-level 3GPP/WAP Liaison • MMEG initially coordinating interface between 3GPP and WAG • 3GPP now expected to work directly with Multimedia Drafting Commitee IDO Corporation

  11. 18-19Jan WAP MMEG/Architecture WG joint meeting • Drafted Charter for newly-formed WAP Multimedia Drafting Committee • draft WAP multimedia-related specifications • formed initially to develop WAP specs for 3GPP MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) • Charter mentions 3GPP, BUT WAP work is clearly not dependent on 3GPP schedules. • IDO attended meeting and was able to: (1) Gain approval for Liaison letter to 3GPP2 (2) Gain mention of 3GPP2 in Charter IDO Corporation

  12. 3GPP2 activities in WAP Forum • Many WAP WGs have put out calls for cdmaOne expertise. (almost no response) • WAP Carriers (CEG) output Position Statement supporting WAP Multimedia in Jan. Urged contact with both 3GPPs. • IDO initiates exchange of Liaison Letters between 3GPP2 and WAP Forum (Jan) • Includes general level liaison and one working-level liaison (multimedia) • Seeking vendor for liaison contact people. (IDO is ‘interim’ contact.) IDO Corporation

  13. Request to 3GPP2 TSG-P Review 3GPP1 Stage 1-3 Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) documents • WAP Forum is developing specifications to support 3GPP1 MMS • Review would identify whether or not there is conflict with 3GPP2 work • if no conflict found, no action needed • if conflict found, necessary to input to WAP Forum • identify if review by other TSGs is desirable IDO Corporation

  14. Thank You IDO Corporation
