  2. Spain • Spain has got a surface of 504,750 Km² • There are about 46 million inhabitants • The capital city of Spain is Madrid • Spain is a constitutional monarchy • It is divided into 17 regions • People in Spain speak different languages like Spanish, Catalan, Basque or Galician

Ourregion: Catalonia • Catalonia is in the North-east of Spain • Its surface is about 32106 Km² • It has about 7.5 million inhabitants • In Catalonia there are two official languages: Spanish and Catalan • The capital city of Catalonia is Barcelona • La Generalitat de Catalunya is the government of our region • Catalonia is divided into 4 provinces and 41 councils.

A briefhistory of Catalonia • In the course of history many different people have lived in Catalonia: Iberian people, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Romans, Germanic civilizations, Muslims. • The origins of the region were established in the Middle Age. • Catalonia lived its best moments in the Middle Age when the Aragon crown dominated different territories in the Mediterranean sea (Balearic islands, Sicily and Greece)

  5. Catalan symbols • The officialflag of Catalonia is “La senyera” • The patronsaint of Catalonia is Saint George • The fourredstripes of theflagsymbolizetheblood of count Guifre El Pelós’ fingers. • The nationalhymn is “Els Segadors” • The nationalday is on 11th September.

  6. Other symbols of Catalonia. • Most of thepopulation in Cataloniaarecatholic. • The mountain of Montserrat withitssanctuary and La Sagrada Família aretwo of themainreligioussymbols of Catalonia.

  7. Economy • Agriculturerepresents 3% of Catalan economy. The mainproductsare: cava (champagne),fruit and cold meat. • Industryrepresents 40%.The main industries areconstruction, motor indusrty,chemical and food. • The service sectionrepresents 57%.Trade and turismarevery important.

  8. Tourism • Spain is one of themainturisticdestinations in theworld. About 55 milionpepolevisit Spain everyyear. • In Cataloniatheturism is alsoone of themaineconomic sectors. • Barcelona is the most important cultural destination. • Most of theturistsareconcentrated in the Catalan coasts and beaches: from Costa Daurada (South) to Costa Brava (North).

  9. Culture • Somewell-knowninternationalartistwere born in Catalonia: Antoni Gaudí, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies. • Pablo Picasso alsospentsomeperiods of time in Barcelona. • Wealsoneed to mention medieval catalan art (Romanesque and Gothic) and modernism.

  10. Traditions • The nationaldance of Catalonia is “la sardana” • AnothertraditionarroundCataloniaare castellers (humans castles). • In manytowns and villages all arounCataloniathereareGiants (symbol of thetown) and correfoc (peopledressed up likedevilsplayingwithfire).

  11. Gastronomy • In thecatalangastronomythe most imporantfood is:fuet, botifarra(a sort of sausage). • Wine and cava arealso important in ourgastronomy. • Sometypicaldessertsare “crema catalana”(catalancream), “carquinyolis” and “els panallets”.

  12. Curiosities • One of the typical dishes are snails. • A typical catalan drink is Sangria. • In Saint George festival (23th April) is boys give a rose to girls as a present and girls give a book to boys. • Two typical Christmas caracters of Catalonia are “el cagatió and el caganer”.
