    17. Neural images from the two eyes are cut into slabs and interdigitated in visual cortex area V1. Why interdigitate? - rather than keep eyes in separate layers? If strips are cut finely enough, the 2 images are almost seamlessly integrated into a single, fused neural image. thus, a simple, unified percept can be built up from 2 slightly disparate views. This is a way to merge the two neural images into a single, cyclopean eye.
