  1. Bellringer • Name three major cities located near the Rocky Mountains. (You may use your phone to look up the answer)

  2. Geography Unit—1 Part—1 Pg.— 13-17

  3. Weekly Jobs • At the end of each class students are required to make sure their group is clean and everything is turned in. • #1-Turn in all work (Make sure group work is stapled and folded correctly!) • #2-Wipe down all desks in group. • #3 and #4- Clean up ANYTHING around your group’s area (paper, trash, etc.)

  4. End Before—Guess the Lesson

  5. Guess the Lesson—Possible Answers • GPS • Continents • Cities • Regions • Location

  6. Learning Goals • ALCOS #1:Describe the world in spatial terms using maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies. • Goal: Tell me how geographers think about and study the world.

  7. End Read—Pg. 13 • Read through “Thinking Spatially” then STOP. • 2’s: Key Term Keeper (Make sure you have every key term defined.) • 3’s : Key Fact Keeper (Find at least 3 key facts for each part of our lesson.) • 1’s: Summarizer (Summarize each part of our lesson, 3 sentences for each summary MINIMUM.)

  8. Geography involves spatial thinking—thinking about a space on Earth’s surface. • Geographers use geographic patterns to find similarities between two or more places.

  9. Geographers use a system called GIS, or Geographic Information Systems to create detailed maps that use many layers of data.

  10. End QARs • What do geographers look for when comparing two different cities or locations? • What system is used by geographers to create maps and layers of data?

  11. End Read—Pg. 14 • Read through “Themes and Elements” then STOP. • T—Title (1) • H—Headings/Subheadings (1) • I—Introduction (1) • V—Vocab/Key Terms defined (4) • S—Summary of the lesson at the end. (1)

  12. Geographers study five themes of geography . • The five themes are: Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Region. • Absolute location is the exact point that something is located. Geographers use satellite systems to pinpoint locations, which is called Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

  13. End QARs • How many themes do geographers study? • What are the themes?

  14. End Read—Pg. 17 • Read through “World Regions” then STOP. • 3’s: Key Term Keeper (Make sure you have every key term defined.) • 1’s: Key Fact Keeper (Find at least 3 key facts for each part of our lesson.) • 2’s: Summarizer (Summarize each part of our lesson, 3 sentences for each summary.)

  15. Certain places have similar traits and customs which are called regions. • Often times, a region will include all of, or most of a continent. • Continents are large landmasses on the Earth’s surface.

  16. End QARs • What are places called with similar traits and customs?

  17. QAR Answers • What do geographers look for when comparing two different cities or locations? • Geographic patterns • What system is used by geographers to create maps and layers of data? • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) • How many themes do geographers study? • Five • What are the themes? • Location, Place, Human-Environment Interaction, Movement, and Region • What are places called with similar traits and customs? • Regions
