  1. Cutting-edge Features of Amazon Web Services DMS

  2. In today’s data-driven business environment, organizations need to ensure that database management processes are optimized and done with a minimum of human intervention. In the earlier days, companies spent huge amounts of resources for data management and to collect and collate data from various sources.

  3. But now, the same companies want options that are customized for both structured and unstructured databases so that data from various sources can be integrated into one database. They want to migrate their databases to technologically advanced platforms like cloud-based Amazon Web Services (AWS) through data Migration Service (DMS). By using Amazon DMS, it is possible to migrate databases from any source to AWS quickly and efficiently. During the process of migration, the source database remains fully functional and hence there is no downtime or break in service. Any databases can be migrated to and from databases with Amazon DMS.

  4. The advantage of AWS DMS is that it is enabled for both homogenous migration like Oracle to Oracle or heterogeneous migration like Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle to Amazon Aurora. It also helps to continually replicate data to consolidate databases into a data warehouse with petabyte-volume data streamed to Amazon S3 and Amazon Redshift.

Benefits of Amazon DMS There are several benefits of AWS DMS. • There is no need to install additional drivers or applications for Amazon DMS and changes are not required to be made to the source database. The migration of databases can be started with a few clicks only on the AWS Management Console. DMS completes the data migration automatically without human intervention and replicates data of the source database. • Amazon DMSis a low-cost affordable service and payment is only for the quantum of computing or storage facilities used. A terabyte-sized database can be migrated for only $3. This is true regardless of whether the migration is homogeneous or heterogeneous. • All changes to the data at the source are continually replicated to the target during the migration process. Hence the source and target databases remain fully functional during migration without downtime. After migration, the two – source and target – remain in sync till the switchover is officially initiated. • Most widely-used databases in commercial and open-source applications are supported by Amazon DMS and hence data can be moved between text-based targets, SQL, and NoSQL. • A migration process can be started quickly in the AWS Management Console of Amazon DMSonce the parameters are defined in AWS DMS. It includes setting up connections to both the source and the target databases and choosing the replication instance. This activity can be used for test runs before the actual migration process begins. • Amazon DMStracks source and target databases continually as well as the replication instance and the network connectivity. • Apart from these benefits, AWS Database Migration Service can also be used to consolidate various source databases into a single target database.
