  1. Making Amazon S3 a Target for AWS Data Migration Service

  2. Amazon Web Services Data Migration Service – AWS DMS – is a cloud-based service that facilitates quick migration of data warehouses, relational databases, NoSQL databases, and others. It can also be used for migrating databases from on-premises to the cloud, from cloud to cloud, and even in rare cases from the cloud to on-premises. Since AWS DMC is a part of the AWS cloud, all the optimized features like cost efficiency, security, flexibility, and speed to market are available in AWS DMC.

  3. Change Data Capture CDC Before going into AWS DMS CDC S3, it is necessary to evaluate each component in this setup. AWS DMC has been seen already. Now, CDC or Change Data Capture is the process of recording modifications made in the latest production data or metadata which is then stored in a separate data repository replication software. An AWS DMS CDC task can be created for capturing current changes at source while migrating data to the target and is useful for replicating ongoing changes from a source data store.

Amazon S3 • Amazon S3 or Simple Storage Service is managed by Amazon and is for users who require the option to work with limited storage operations and quickly scale up to tens of terabytes of data if required. There are several attributes of Amazon S3. • S3 provides different access levels from loading low-cost storage options to massive volumes of data. It provides unmatched data durability and scalability and new projects can be started without additions to the existing hardware or software. Other features of Amazon S3 include data protection, access management, data replication, and cost affordability. The replication process with AWS DMS CDC to S3 can be carried out both within and outside the region with S3 having the capability to go through billions of objects of Batch Operations.  • You can migrate data using AWS DMS CDC to S3 from any supported database sources. When S3 is the target in an AWS DMS activity, both full load or Change data capture CDC data is written in a comma-separated format by default. 

  5. Fundamentals of using Amazon S3 as a target  Before migrating data through AWS DMS CDC to S3 ensure the following. · The AWS account used for the migration has an IAM role that includes write and delete access to the S3 bucket that is the target. · The S3 bucket that is being used as the target is in the same AWS region as the DMS replication instance being used to migrate the data. · The role should have tagging access so that any objects being written to the target bucket can be tagged through AWS DMS CDC to S3. · DMS (dms.amazonaws.com) is present in the IAM role as an additional entity. Also, make sure that the role assigned to the user for completing the migration task has the required permissions to do so.
