Service Learning Served 30 students Would serve every Sunday morning and Wednesday Night in the children’s ministry where I completed any task that was needed of me such as: • Running the PowerPoint • Getting in front of the students an telling them bible stories • Teaching the students how run the video monitor and complete other task

  4. Project Findings People that I served: • Pastor: The way he taught his students was in the ways of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. He loved his job and was very good with capturing the attention of his students. • Students: The students were always excited to enter children’s church. They interacted with their pastor in a very positive way. They were interested to learn new things and to get up in front of each other.

  5. Project Findings Difficulties/Challenges: • They challenges each day of serving was to get the students to focus on the lesson or topic for that day. Once I would get one student to pay attention, there would be another who would not pay attention. • Once having their attention it was very hard to keep it there, we would have to quickly move on to the next thing or the students would become anxious or bored.

Project Findings • Strategies- Strategies for keeping their attention where to give the students a reward. • Self-reflection- I have learned a lot about how I want to be as a teacher, I want my students to have the feeling of accomplishment through themselves not in getting a reward. • Room For Improvement- That the pastor could motivate his students more through intrinsic motivation rather that giving them candy and extrinsically motivating them to learn what he is teaching them.

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic • INTRINSIC MOTIVATION: Internal desires to perform a particular task, people do certain activities because it gives them pleasure, develops a particular skill, or It’s morally the right thing to do. • EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION: Factors external to the individual and unrelated to the Task they are performing. Examples include money, good grades, and any other type of reward.

  8. Andrew Maslow “Abraham Maslow, has concluded that before we can be intrinsically motivated we must first satisfy some more basic human needs.” Which leads us to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

  10. Motivation • Something that energizes, direct, and sustains behaviors. • According to research it is better for a student to learn through intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation.

  11. Argument • My argument is that students learn more from intrinsic motivation than from extrinsic motivation. • I believe that a student will learn more about themselves and what they can accomplish without receiving a reward to back that up.

Evidence-Before Changes • In the beginning of my service learning I noticed that the children's pastor intrinsic and extrinsic motivate his students. • He would rarely motivate his students intrinsically by having the students feel the accomplishments of learning something new or remember something that happened the previous week.

  13. Evidence-Before Changes • He would always motivate his students extrinsically by having the students to answer questions and then when answering them correctly they would earn a piece of candy. He also would give out prizes for those who were most behaved.

Evidence-After Changes • Things that I changed: • No candy is to be rewarded to the students for correct answers. • Once a student has answered the question correctly they will take time to be proud of themselves. • We will encourage our students be proud of themselves and also make sure that their basic human needs are met to make the change successful.

  15. How does the theory pertain to psychology? • The theory of motivation and relates to psychology in the way that it relates to our students behavior. It also has to do with their mind and how they feel about themselves. I believe that my future students will understand that learning in my classroom will have importance in their everyday life's.
