3. Registration Timeline Registration Forms will be distributed today. This year printed copies of the Program of Studies are not available for every student. (There is an electronic copy on the school website) For courses requiring applications they will be available from in the Counseling Office. Applications and Registration forms should be turned in to your Homeroom teacher by Wednesday, February 26th. Individual registration will take place on Friday in the Media Center.

4. All counselors, Ms. C. Miller, and Ms. Osborne will register students in the Media Center. We will be calling you down by homeroom during 1st, 2nd, and 4th blocks. During these meetings, staff will confirm course selections and review progress towards meeting graduation requirements. THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR COURSE SELECTION. IF STUDENTS HAVE QUESTIONS, THEY SHOULD SEE THEIR TEACHERS OR COUNSELORS BEFORE TURNING IN A REGISTRATION FORM. 5. Eligibility for Honors & AP Level Courses To be eligible to sign-up for Honors and/or AP level courses, students should have an A or B in prerequisite or subject area courses (Ex: If you want to take Honors Civics… you will need to have an A or B in World History) Students taking Honors and/or AP level courses MUST turn in the Honors Level & Above Courses Form (pink form) Those that do not will be placed in Standard level course. Things to consider for Honors/AP Level Courses: Independent outside assignments are usually required Taught at a higher level & faster pace Test strategies are different Extra projects required Extra GPA points awarded

6. Students who are not recommended for a course and wish to appeal the letter grade decision will be given a waiver form. (brown form) The waiver must be signed by student and a parent and turned it with your registration form. Students who do not complete and return the waiver will not be allowed to sign up for Honors or AP courses. Waiver Process

7. Completing Your Registration Form Keep up with your form – do not lose or discard it. Complete your name, student number you and have your parent sign the form Print neatly so that we can read it Choose 8 classes & 2 alternates (mark course selections with a check and alternates with an A) Pay attention to the symbols (ex. prerequisites, application required, standard & honors credit available etc.)

8. Course Offerings Keep in mind available courses change from year to year. All potential courses are listed on the registration form but they will not be scheduled unless enough students sign up to take them. If you are interested in a course … sign up!

10. Graduation Requirements • Students who enter the 9th grade for the first time during or after the 2009-2010 school year must meet Future Ready Core Requirements in order to graduate.

11. Future Ready Core Requirements • English 4 Credits • Math 4 Credits • Science 3 Credits • Social Studies 4 Credits • Health/PE 1 Credit • Required Electives 6 Credits • Other Electives 6 Credits Total 28 Credits

12. Math Requirements 4 Math Credits are Required Math I Math II Math III One other math course based on your plans after high school. Examples: Advanced Functions, Pre-calculus, Discrete Math, AP Statistics or AP Calculus

13. Elective Requirements 6 Required Electives • 2 Elective credits of any combination from either Career Technical Education (CTE), Arts Education, or foreign languages. (Students planning to attend a 4-year university should plan to take at least 2 foreign language credits to meet minimum admission requirements) • 4 Elective credits recommended in a four-course concentration from one of the following: • Career Technical Education • Arts Education (music or visual arts) • JROTC • Any other subject area (ex: math, science, social studies, English)

14. Minimum Admission Requirements for 4-year UNC Colleges • Foreign Language – Student must earn 2 credits in the same language • Math – Student must pass Alg. I, Geometry, Alg. II and one beyond Alg II. (Functions and Modeling, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Honors Discrete Mathematics) • Career/Technical classes are not REQUIRED, but it is recommended that students take courses in these areas for electives.

15. Other Graduation Requirements • Must successfully complete a Graduation Project prior to graduation the senior year (paper, product, portfolio & presentation)

16. NC Scholars Program Students satisfactorily completing requirements for an academically challenging high school program will be named NC Academic Scholars and receive special recognition. Will receive a seal of recognition attached to your diploma. Will receive special recognition on the printed program for graduation exercises. May use this special recognition in applying to post-secondary institutions. See pages 2-3 of the Program of Studies for requirements.

18. Applications Applications are required for the following courses: • Media Assistant • Yearbook • Early Childhood Education • RCC We are no longer able to offer Office Assistant/ Peer Helper for credit. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Return to your homeroom teacher by Wednesday, February 26th to be considered for the course.

19. RCC - Core 44 College Transfer Pathway • To be eligible for enrollment in the Career and College Promise Core 44 College Transfer Pathway, a high school student must meet the following criteria:: • Be a high school junior or senior: • Weighted GPA of 3.0 • Demonstrate college readiness on an assessment or placement test (see application packet). • Must complete Honors Contract along with application • A student must enroll in one Core 44 College Transfer Pathway program of study and may not substitute courses in one program for courses in another. Pathways are listed below. • Business & Economics • Engineering & Mathematics • Humanities & Social Science • Life & Health Sciences

20. RCC - Career Technical Education Pathway • To be eligible for enrollment in the Career Technical Education Pathway, a high school student must meet the following criteria: • Be a high school junior or senior; • Have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or have the recommendation of the high school principal or his/her designee; and • Meet the prerequisites for the career pathway. • Must complete Honors Contract along with application • A student must enroll in one program of study and may not substitute courses in one program for courses in another.

22. RCC - Career Technical Education Pathway – Things to Remember… • Available courses are listed in the application packet. • You must be firmly committed to taking and passing RCC courses. Failure to completely follow through will disqualify you for financial aid at RCC in the future, plus there will be negative consequences at SWRHS. • RCC courses are taught at college level which means they are more difficult! Instructors set their own attendance policies, most of which are VERY strict (ex., more than 2 and you fail!) • Applications must be returned with registration form on Thursday.

23. Additional Advice… • Choose your classes VERY carefully • Courses offered are based on the original numbers generated from registration forms. • When you select a course or alternate on your registration form it is a commitment to take the course.Schedule changes are not an option if you chose the course on your form. This is especially true for Honors and AP courses. You will not be allowed to drop them at a later date. • As you select courses, be mindful of your objectives after high school. Four year universities have minimum admission requirements for the course work completed in high school. • Summer schedule changes • In the weeks prior to the start of the school year, designated days are established for each grade level for counselors to make schedule changes for BOTH fall and spring semesters.

24. Requests for a schedule change in the summer and will ONLY be considered for the following reasons: • Balance academic schedule • Correct sequence of classes (Algebra 1 before Geometry) • Failed prerequisite • Missing a course required for graduation. • If a student does NOT turn in a registration form, the counselor will select the classes for the student based on what is available. The student loses the right for any schedule changes.
