Environments • Business – some challenges but mature • Applications – chaotic – many challenges • Archiving – relatively new – most challenging
Applications - challenges • Backup • COOP/DR • Storage • Scalability • Tech refresh - migration
Archiving - challenges • Ingest • Inventory/Content Management • Storage • Migration • Tech refresh • Applications interface
What the Library has Servers and Storage • Heterogeneous server environment – 200 servers – various Unix and Windows • Monolithtic storage environment – EMC – 650TB and Sun/STK 150TB – 80% used • Tape environment – IBM TotalStorage and Sun/STK SL8500 • Near Line – 40TB CAS 100% used, 500TB tape 60% used • Retrievable data stored – 950-980TB
The Library modelAudio Video Conservation Center • Ingest – TB/day • Workflow - automated • Content Management • Applications interface – deployable products • Storage – disk and tape
Challenges • Preservation • Migration • Content Management
Preservation • Backup • Archiving • COOP/DR • What files are part of the Applications environment and what files are part of the Archive environment
Migration • Tech refresh • Scalability • We don’t want to deal with the equivalent of wax cylinders 10 years from now • This will be the biggest issue in 5-10 years
Content Management • Ingest • Content description management • Applications interface • Ingest is something we can do but knowing what we have and how to retrieve it is a bigger issue
