  1. David’s Worship Lesson 1

  2. Visual

  3. Introduction • “In Tents” Worship • Lesson Context

  4. Moving Day Mishaps • Moving from one location to another can be frustrating enough without making any of the following moving mistakes. • Have any of these happened to you? • 1. Belongings are broken or damaged. • Solution: • Pack everything properly using moving boxes and supplies, and don’t ask clumsy people to help you move!

  5. Moving Day Mishaps • Have any of these happened to you? • 2. Your couch/chair/table won’t fit through the door. • Solution: • Measure furniture and doorways ahead of time; take legs off furniture or remove hinges from doors.

  6. Moving Day Mishaps • Have any of these happened to you? • 3. Friends/family who promise to help don’t show up. • Solution: • Hire two professionals to supplement friends and family, or ask more people to come help than you’ll actually need.

  7. Moving Day Mishaps • King David made some strategic mistakes the first time he tried to move the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. • Because he didn’t move it properly, the ark started to fall, and a man died when he touched it to steady it. • So the next time he decided to move it, King David made sure to do it the right way. • Let’s find out what that involved.

  8. Preparations1 Chronicles 15:1-3, 14-16 • Creating a Place (v. 1) • Carrying the Ark (vv. 2, 3, 14, 15) • Conducting Worship (v. 16)

  9. Dialogue with David • If King David had been interviewed about his first attempt to move the ark of the covenant, this is what he might have said. • Interviewer: Why did you think that moving the ark of the covenant was important? • David: Since the ark was not given the respect it deserved during the reign of Saul, it needed to be moved to Jerusalem. • Read 1 Chronicles 13:3.

  10. Dialogue with David • Interviewer: What plans did you make to move the ark the first time? • David: I consulted the people and they agreed that it was a good idea to move the ark. We found a new oxcart and loaded the ark on it. • Read 1 Chronicles 13:4, 7.

  11. Dialogue with David • Interviewer: How did the move go overall? • David: The move ended in loss of life! The Lord struck Uzzah dead after he touched the ark to steady it when the oxen stumbled. I was afraid to try to move it again. • Read 1 Chronicles 13:9-13.

  12. What Do You Think? • What are some ways to show respect for a church building without seeing it as God’s temple? • Digging Deeper – How do Exodus 25–27 and 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; 6:19 help you identify principles of tabernacle maintenance that are appropriate to apply to us as temples of the Holy Spirit?

  13. What Do You Think? • How will we know when our acts of worship are pleasing God? • Digging Deeper – How will our preparation for worship compare and contrast with that of the Levites?

  14. What Do You Think? • How can churches improve the way people are appointed to various ministry roles? • Digging Deeper – What passages in addition to Acts 6:1-6; 14:23; 2 Corinthians 8:19; and Titus 1:5 inform your conclusion? Why?

  15. Ceremony1 Chronicles 15:25-29a • A Time of Joy (v. 25) • A Time to Sacrifice (v. 26) • A Time to Worship (vv. 27-29a)

  16. What Do You Think? • What can you do to help ensure that your church’s worship services communicate a spirit of joy? • Digging Deeper – Under what circumstances, if any, should a worship service not communicate a spirit of joy? Why?

  17. What Do You Think? • What one or two procedures can your church implement to convey that the offering time is itself a significant act of corporate worship? • Digging Deeper – What’s the single most important thing your church can do to honor both monetary and nonmonetary sacrifices appropriately?

  18. Dialogue with David • If King David were interviewed after the second time he moved the ark of the covenant, his words would be much more positive. • Interviewer: Why did you decide to try to move the ark a second time? • David: With other buildings finished and a tent constructed for the ark, it was time to move it to Jerusalem. • Read 1 Chronicles 15:1, 3.

  19. Dialogue with David • Interviewer: What plans did you make for the move that were different from the first time? • David: I was impulsive on my first attempt to move the ark. This time I ensured that the ark was moved properly by the Levites and carried on poles. • Read 1 Chronicles 15:2, 14-16.

  20. Dialogue with David • Interviewer: How did this move go overall? • David: What a tremendous success! The accompanying worship, characterized by music and sacrifices, could not have gone better. • Read 1 Chronicles 15:25-28.

  21. Proper Planning • A meaningful worship experience doesn’t just happen by chance but requires careful planning. • Think about your church’s worship services and answer the following questions. • 1. How can good planning help to make our worship experience more powerful? • 2. What are some needed preparations before worship?

  22. Proper Planning • 3. How can we ensure that worship is truly uplifting for all as it exalts God? • 4. What can we do to keep worship joyful yet reverent?

  23. Conclusion • Intent on Worship • Prayer • Thought to Remember

  24. Thought to Remember Our weekly worship should not be entered into weakly.
