  2. CanGeoRef is: • a web-based Reference database, updated weekly • a joint venture of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences/CFES and the American Geosciences Institute/AGI. • an integral part (live subset) of GeoRef (3.2 million references), which has been owned and run by AGI for 40+ years.

  3. CanGeoRef contains references to any geoscience literature indexed ‘Canada’; currently 200,000+ references • CFES’s job: update and supplement the database with missing Canadian references  complete by late 2013. • CFES improves access to Canadian geosciences literature by and for Canadian geoscientists

  4. CanGeoRef contains references to: • peer reviewed literature (journal articles) • (chapters in) books • GSC literature • Conference proceedings and abstracts • Provincial/Territorial Geological Survey reports and maps (support from CPTG) • Theses • Future: mineral assessment reports

  5. Target market: individuals and organizations who are not in the market for GeoRef CanGeoRef price Individual < $100.- / yr Company with > 10 geoscientists: < $1000.-/yr GeoRef price > $10,000/yr

  6. Why pay when Google is free? • CanGeoRef is objective: different users - searching the database with a specific keyword - get the same results. • Free online search engines, including Google scholar, are subjective: they show the user what they calculate that that user finds important, based on earlier searches by that same user. Thus, these search engines personalize the search process: different users get different results • Also: Free online search engines are not subject to QC. Result: they are incomplete and have broken links.

  8. This is the advanced search screen, where you can search for multiple parameters (we are looking to add a lat/long parameter). This is a Boolean search system (see drop down, shown open here). We used only 2 search terms for this demo: ‘Gold’ AND ‘Ontario Geological Survey’

  9. OGS published 875 documents that are indexed with the keyword ‘Gold’(*). This screen shows one record, because we choose to show a Full Record (see dropdown). You can also choose to see a Table or Brief Record. If the full document is available online, the link is on the record.

  10. This is the OGS page that comes up when you click on the full text link for this record in the previous slide. You can now retrieve the document.
