Task of assessment • to guide and encourage • how well the pupil has met the objectives • to help the pupil to form a realistic image of his or her learning and development • students should be encouraged and taught for self-assessment. ELSM 2011-2012
Principles of assessment • truthful • based on the description of good performance (8) • the description of good performance and the final evalutation’s criteria specify the knowledge and skill levels that constitute the basis of pupil assessment • pupil’s progress, work skills, and behaviour are assessed in relation to the curriculum’s goals and descriptions of good performance ELSM 2011-2012
numerical or verbal • parents or other guardian has to be informed • teachers have to give regular feedback about pupils’ work – different methods should be used • the grounds of assessment have to be informed - (often at parents evenings, on school net pages) • based on a diversity of evidence ELSM 2011-2012
Ways of evaluation/assessment • subjects and behaviour are evaluated • numerically • by verbal summaries • or a combination of the two • when using verbal assessment, the school year report is to state whether the pupil has met the objectvies acceptably • grades in core subjects latest by the eight school year ELSM 2011-2012
In addition to school year reports • the pupil • parents or the guardian • assessment feedback adequately and in a diverse manner • pupil’s progress and strengths • areas of learning that need improvement • intermediate reports, different types of notices, assessment discussions, etc. ELSM 2011-2012
Self-assessment by a pupil • to develop pupils’ capability for self-assessment • to support the growth of pupils’ self-knowledge and the development of her/his study skills • to reinforce pupils’ self-esteem, self-image as a learner, and sense of involvement • pupils learn to assess their learning progress and process and to establish goals of their own ELSM 2011-2012
Next grade • the pupil is promoted to the next grade if she or she acceptably completes all studies in the different subjects • also if they are judged to be able to cope with the next year’s studies acceptably • a pupil may be retained – failing performance • possibility to demonstrate his/her skills • a pupil may be retained for other reasons – parents/guardian has to be heard ELSM 2011-2012
Progress in studies according to a personal study programme • has to be marked in the report • new legistlation • regular suppor • special support • has to be recorded ELSM 2011-2012
Assessment of some subjects • subjects assessed separately except for the environmental and natural studies subject group (varies in different grades) • work skills • bahaviour • and • self-assessment by the pupil ELSM 2011-2012
Grading – assessment - reports • 4 fail • 5 adequate - passable • 6 moderate • 7 satisfactory • 8 good • 9 proficient • 10 excellent ELSM 2011-2012
