AUTUMN PUBLIC MEETING “Bike Storage at Home and Work” + = ?? • Neil Anderson, TPi – work for Spokes • Angela Hull, Tollcross Energy & Carbon Saving – practical bike storage initiative • Gary Bell, Bike Station – bike storage at work
Cycle Storage in Tenements “No storage facilities in flat, and would be unable to keep in the stair. Would love to have a bike!” • Survey: 86% said storage is problematic to some degree. • 32%: storage problems stopped them from cycling as much as they’d like.
Spokes CCF ProjectTackle residential bike storage to get more people cycling • Work with TPI consultants to research options • Produce practical information for residents on bike storage options • Use this to stimulate local action by individuals / groups • Lobby the Council for action, esp on-street pilots Project info on Spokes website – downloads – technical & research – tenements
How will this project help? Spokes survey: • 92%: interest in practical information on possible solutions • 85%: would then discuss options with neighbours • 41%: would then look at buying equipment for own home. • 52%: would then lobby Councillors etc. for action
COMING NEXT … presentations from … • TPi • Tollcross Energy & Carbon Saving • Bike Station
Some Issues • Building control, esp for stairwell storage • Developing good relations with neighbours • Engaging landlords • Abandoned bikes • On-street storage – design, Streetscape, parking • Funding for communal storage improvements • New-build flats
Some Outcomes so Far • Substantial evidence base – (a) issues for residents (b) possible solutions to these. • Engagement of other organisations • Raising the profile of this issue – with residents and a range of relevant organisations. • Strong CEC interest in making practical improvements - ATAP
On-Street Bike Storage “There really isn't space for cycle storage on the back green or in the stairwell, if there was we have used this solution before now. In my street we really need on street parking.” • CEC interest in running pilots • Options – racks, ‘bread bins’, lockers etc • Constraints – cost, Streetscape, residents’ views • Information needed to make a case
Please help! New Spokes Survey What would ‘every-day’ cyclists need to make on-street storage attractive? • What distance from residences • How secure • What weather protection • Wider residents’ views…
Questions / Discussion! • Thoughts on possible solutions… In-flat / stairwells / backgreen / elsewhere.. • On-street storage – issues, needs, options… • The way forward… Could YOU take action, to improve storage facilities where you live??? Please remember to fill in your survey form!
