  5. “Faculty/Professional Development/Support”Activities and Resources to Help Improve Teaching and Learning (with Technology) Most colleges and universities provide a variety of activities and resources to help faculty members improve teaching and learning with technology.  "Faculty Development" is a term used widely in the United States that includes the full set of these activities and resources offered at a single college or university (and is not limited to services involving technology). We use “Faculty Development” and “Faculty Support” and recognize that these are not synonyms and that terminology matters.

  6. How we do Faculty Dev/SupportStrategies, Activities, & Approaches On this poll – options based on what we learned 7/11/2008 - “check” all of the following activities, resources, approaches, or strategies that are offered at your institution for faculty support/development – at least once per year: Institute or “boot camp”: group work (sometimes with individual projects) lasting many days Workshops – entirely face-to-face; ½- 2 days Workshops – entirely face-to-face; 1-3 hours Short sessions – entirely face-to-face; less than 1 hour Support staff with disciplinary expertise who work mostly or only with departments in similar field Consultations (one-on-one, classroom visits, etc.) Online support (guided demonstrations, online orientations, courses, chat rooms, etc.) Faculty Learning Communities/Working Groups Mini-grants for individuals Idea updates – Newsletters, emails, podcasts, RSS feeds Other (please enter your additional categories in the chat room)

[In future uses of this question, we’ll urge respondents not to exclude activities or resources that provided themselves!]

  19. Some Topics, Themes, Issues We’re Already Considering (1) • Faculty as ResourceLeaders and Compassionate Pioneers(ing) • Small Steps (includes LTAs, BHWs) • Small Groups (variation on “viral dissemination”) • Rationales Convincing arguments • Case Studies or Scenarios • For explanations of above, see: http://tinyurl.com/TLTG-FacDev

  20. Some Topics, Themes, Issues We’re Already Considering (2) • Constructive Responses to DiversityAmong Students and Faculty • Individual Independent Usage • Engaging Words, Styles • Inter- & Intra-institutional Collaboration • Evaluation/Research on Impact, Tradeoffs Among Strategies • Hybrid and Online Options • CaringThe 8th Principle? • For explanations of above, see: http://tinyurl.com/TLTG-FacDev

  21. For more info, suggestions • gilbert@tltgroup.org • See Google Doc: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ah77rqpdrwgj_339d7svgrg6 or http://tinyurl.com/TLTG-FacDev

  22. STOP!

  23. Disappointing, Unwanted, or Missing What TLTG Has Noticed Limited Resources - Too few resources, services, studies, rewards, allocated to faculty in using IT as lever for better teaching, learning Peripheral Budgets for faculty development – support for TLT innovation not (yet) treated as core to institution Too little attention to keeping teaching/learning as central focus– insufficient attention to tradeoffs/considering what might be lost by using technology inappropriately or problems that might arise Too little emphasis on how to take instructional advantage of available/low cost tools - such as Skype, cell phones

  24. What’s Next?What TLTG hopes to do (2)

  25. What’s Next? What TLTG hopes to do (1) Better support and reward for Compassionate Pioneers and acts of Compassionate Pioneering - Network of faculty from different institutions frequently discussing how to improve teaching the ‘same’ course Systematic harvesting, distribution of LTAs (Low-Threshold Applications and Activities) Develop/Integrate resources and services around key teaching/learning activities More TLT scenarios/cases that can be used to help prepare faculty for IT integration (see: http://tinyurl.com/66dpbl)) Services and resources on IT-enabled strategies for dealing with diversity (in courses, workshops) Workshops helping faculty use course management systems and other technology tools in ways that fit their disciplines, students, and their own strengths as teachers (e.g., this TLT Group workshop: http://tinyurl.com/4fzs8r) More strategic planning for faculty support that it help advance institutional goals (e.g. undergraduate research)

  26. Continuing Conversations – Where to Next? Continuing Thread of Friday Live! Sessions • When? • One week each month? (which one?) • At the POD Network Conference? • Other Conferences? • What? • Faculty Development Strategies • POD Innovation Awards (“Bright Ideas”) • Increasing Attendance at Faculty Development • Faculty Leaders – Strategies for highlighting and using expertise • Being Responsive – Using interest surveys to tailor practice and offerings
