  2. What is Thyroid Cancer? • Cancer that forms in the Thyroid gland. • Abnormal cells begin to grow on the thyroid gland.

  3. What is the Thyroid Gland? • A butterfly shaped gland in the front of your throat toward the bottom. • Makes hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight.

  4. What causes Thyroid Cancer? • Tumor Suppressor Genes slow down cell division or cause cells to die. • DNA mutations may cause cancers.

  5. Symptoms • Lumps or swelling in the throat. • Pain in neck/ears. • Trouble swallowing. • Trouble breathing. • Hoarse voice. • Frequent cough.

  6. What increases your risk? • A history of radiation treatments to the head, neck, or chest during childhood. • Family who has thyroid cancer. • Age. • Being a women. • Being Asian. • Diet with little iodine.

  7. Treatment • Type of treatment depends on age, type of cancer, and stage of the cancer. • Surgery and radiation therapy are the two most common treatments.

  8. RadiationTherapy • Radiation therapy - The use of high-dose X-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. • May use internal or external radiation therapy. • May be used in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or hormonal therapy.

  9. Main Types of Thyroid Cancer • Papillary. • Follicular. • Medullary. • Anaplastic.

  10. Papillary Thyroid Cancer • Occurs more often in women between ages 30 – 40. • Predominant cancer type in children with thyroid cancer. • Diagnosed by fine needle aspirate. • May cause hoarseness and swollen lymph node.

  11. Follicular Thyroid Cancer • Discovered as a painless lump in the thyroid. • Usually occurs after the age of 40 • Occurs more often in women then in men. • Doesn’t really change the look of the thyroid cells so it’s harder to locate. • Diagnosed by fine needle aspirate.

  12. Medullary Thyroid Cancer • Usually noticed by abnormal amount of cells found during a biopsy. • May cause a lump if not found early enough. • People with Medullary Thyroid Cancer might have hypertension, increased heart rate, or headaches. • Diagnosed by fine needle biopsy or calcitonin blood test

  13. Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer • Very Rare form of thyroid cancer. • Causes tumor cells to grow in solid clusters. • May cause shortness in breath or heavy breathing. • Diagnosed by coarse needle biopsy or a surgical biopsy

  14. Estimated Thyroid Cancer Statistics • New cases: 37,340 in 2008 • Deaths: 1,590 in 2008 • Every two people diagnosed with Thyroid cancer of three is a women.
