  2. Rhamnaceae • 51-55 genera • 900 species • Most common in warmer climates • Plants are synoecious • Fruit is mostly drupe, berry, or schizocarpic capsule • Schizocarpic capsule – fruit derived from a compound ovary which breaks apart into one-carpellate segments

  3. Dwarf alder (Rhamnusalnifolia) • A low spreading shrub • Leaves are alternate, elliptic • Flowers are 3mm across with 5 yellow-green, petal-like, sepals • Fruit are red to black fleshy berries
