Corpus-Based Query Expansion • Internal, School of Computing project, with an emphasis on using query logs • 3 year project, starting third year now • Milestones left to pursue: • Integration of various component systems • Simple to advanced query inference • Integration with LINC if feasible Fall LINC Research Update

Recap: Innopac Properties • Improve upon LINC catalog service • Innopac properties: • No spelling correction • Weak query expansion • No capability to track sessions • Case insensitive • Stopwords also searched for (e.g. ‘the’) • Advanced queries rarely used • Sorting could be improved Fall LINC Research Update

Past Work • Spelling Correction (e.g., spellign correctoin) • Phrase Structure Expansion (e.g., “precast concrete” structures) • Morphological Expansion (e.g., conflict OR conflicts of interest OR interests) • LCSH-based Expansion (Use top-fetched items to expand query using their subject headers) • Known Item Detection (Guess whether the person is trying to locate a specific title) Fall LINC Research Update
